IN interview for IndieWire Todd Phillips, director of the new "The Joker"Commented snippet posted on the Internet scenario. It not only breaks the nines popular fan in theory, but also allows a better understanding of the ending of the film.
Beware, spoilers below!
The scene in question was in the original script, but was not included in the film. It Sophie watched the show with Arthur Murray Franklin Vleck on TV at home. From these frames rejected because the director decided to show the scene through the eyes of Arthur completely and switch to a different location would ruin the effect.
This refutes the popular theory that the whole story - a sick fantasy Arthur Fleck, who all this time was in Arkham Asylum. If he saw Sophie, he's definitely got to show Murray - not the fact that it ended in the murder of a leading and anarchy on the streets of Gotham City, but at large Fleck was certainly.
Given that Arthur originally wanted to show and by the same, we can assume that he really I came in the clown costume and makeup and an evening show really ended his monologue and Murray's death.
Obviously, the stage also served as an iron proof that Sophie is alive. Phillips commented:
Of course, he did not kill her. As writer and director, I can confirm. I and the team thought it was a litmus test that allows the viewer to determine how Fleck mad. Practically everyone with whom I discussed the film realized that she survived - because Arthur took revenge only to those who hurt him, and Sophie did not do anything wrong. Though he and the villain, he also has principles.
Previously, Phillips has confirmed that is not going to release a director's or publish something of material not included in the final cut.
