Immigrated to Canada three years ago, keeps a blog at Instagram about Canadian life and travels.
When three years ago I received a visa to Canada for permanent residence, there was a feeling that I just knocked the ground from under their feet. What sort of joy swept over me is a real panic. Around I said that everything goes according to plan, but in fact it was hard to even have the courage to go to the embassy of your passport. However, after recovering from the initial shock, I start with the zeal he studied Canadian forums and websites - all in order to best prepare yourself and protect from all sorts of trouble. But, friends, I'll tell you this: the move - this is not a guided tour, and, most likely, it will take place as smoothly as you would like.
Personally, I read many articles on the topic "you need to know about moving to another country"And it's a really good article, I urge you not to forget medicines and warm clothes. But note that they do not soften the blow of such radical changes in their lives.
Imagine what it will be difficult. Very difficult. So, in fact, you will be more difficult than you imagine. Therefore, as a man who has gone through all the difficulties of immigration, I want to share with you life hacking, to help cope with the first months of life in a new country.
1. Do not be a tourist
You have come here to live, not to rest. See the sights, try goodies, take a walk, get comfortable and you will have time to relax, after all, you are now on a whole new life. Now you need as soon as possible to establish the normal course of life, namely, to find housing, get a SIM card, social security number, bank account, get a language classesTo understand where there are shops, kindergartens, metro and everything else that makes everyday life the average person.
I know that after a long and exhausting trip, the stress at the border and many weeks of concentrated charges I want to pamper yourself, but the final leap is a must for successful adaptation to the new place.
Here I can add specifically about Canada and Montreal in particular: to rent a house in advance, most likely, will not work. Apartments with rare exceptions are dealt with on the first day of each month, so it is better to move plan, respectively, to the middle-end of the month, so that at a hotel or accommodation with Airbnb succeed save.
I do not know what it is connected, but in Montreal on 1 July - a citywide day of the move. On this day, a significant part of the city is removed from their homes and moved to a new apartment. The largest number of proposals in the property market appears from May to June.
2. Be prepared for the "illogical" prices
I'm from Moscow, and in the lives of a lot of traveling, so accustomed to higher prices. However, this did not save me from the price shock. Difficult, sitting at home in front of a laptop computer, navigate, how much will come out, the average monthly cost of living on the other side of the world. I thought after learning (albeit superficial) prices for the subway, petrol, tomatoes and so I more or less knew what it would cost. Nevertheless, all is not miscalculated, especially when prices are always translate foreign currency into rubles.

metro prices (higher than Moscow, but on the whole adequate) have not prepared for the fact that ordinary shampoo the same brand in Montreal will be five times more expensive than normal bread will cost as much as our 2-3 packs of milk, but the strawberries in winter - like apples Rostov summer.
And do not say that Canada is a dear country itself, it's obvious. The matter soon as we understand that many "should be" in relation to other goods.
When the picture is not the same, keep track of their budget, which is already undergoing strong blows, it becomes extremely difficult.
I'm a man economical to ugliness, my financial discipline even borders on avarice, but nevertheless rebuilt for me was painful, and it took time.
3. Do not worry if somewhat disappointed. This temporarily
Maybe in the very first morning it will be overshadowed by a nasty thought, gnawing away at the brain: "I made a mistake. I want to go home". Maybe it will happen in a week or two, when the sense of tourists (which is still to some extent be present) suddenly recede and you hit the first realization that you can not return home, at least in foreseeable future.
Either way, the thought you are guaranteed to visit and most likely zasyadet in my head for some time. It is very important not to fall into apathy, not to give in fearsThat crawl out of the dark corners and begin to torment you with renewed vigor, and maintain good spirits, and to understand that this is normal, it passes through all the immigrants.
Something you definitely knocks out of the rut, when you think with irritation: "But here in Moscow differently!"
When I arrived at the center on immigration, social worker, seeing my extinct opinion, sentiment took schedule visitors as long sinusoid and said, "Who is hard for you, you will no longer feel the holiday on a new exciting trip. You're tired, you feel lonely and want to go home. You do not understand how to operate in this new environment. However, it will take you, how is everyone who sat in that chair before you. And then you realize that the move to Canada was the best decision of your life. " And you know this woman I was not deceived.
4. Do not over themselves
Looking through the many travel blogs I encountered the same advice more often than others. Its essence is to be open, to get as many friends, to chat with the local to the maximum, even make some contacts in advance on the internet.
If you do fit, you are, of course, greatly facilitate your life. But what to do introverts, Suspicious people and those who used to be based solely on your own judgment? As it is such a person, I declare with certainty that it is not necessary to remake themselves!
Moving - it and so a lot of stress, it is not necessary "to force" themselves with new acquaintances, if you do not feel they need to.
Believe me, you yourself can understand all without the views and opinions of local. If you are a loner in life, do not sacrifice their own comfort to both social can quickly find the desired circle of acquaintances. He will appear in due course. Or does not appear, that's how you choose to do. As a practical man, I believe that relying around the stands in the first place to himself. I feel so comfortable, I missed a lot by yourself and make your own opinion about everything that's going on here.
Here is an interesting story that illustrates what I mean here think. Approximately one month before the arrival in Montreal, I met on the Russian forum with a very pleasant woman who to me (as I it seemed) was filled, many of which advise and even invited to stay with her for the first few months completely is free. Since we talked quite a lot of reasons not to trust her, I had not. On my arrival and call the lady I was busy - and for the first, and in the following days.
This experience, although not the most terrible, nevertheless proved quite unpleasant, especially in a stressful situation. And the essence of this story is not to show what people are unreliable (fully admit that humans have indeed changed circumstances), and to summarize my point: If you can easily come together with people - go ahead, it's your undeniable talent, which just need to use it. If you are accustomed to do with the whole deal, do not worry about it. Do as you are accustomed.
In conclusion I would like to wish each and every one of great courage on the way to their dreams. The new country - it's an amazing world in which you will find many pleasant surprises, new goals, stories and adventures. And if you have decided on a bold move, do not turn to the planned route. This is an invaluable experience that you are sure to be proud of!
