Quentin Tarantino - one of the most prominent directors of our time and the recognized representative of postmodernism in contemporary cinema. Add to that irrepressible passion for film director of all types (starting with penny of Japanese horror and finishing Hollywood peplum) - and you get a huge amount of references and homage to your favorite movie Tarantino in his own works.
Quentin never hid it, sometimes honestly telling where to get one or the other find in his next film. And today we will look at one of the most famous works of Tarantino, with whom he won at Cannes - "Pulp Fiction."
opening credits
Let's start from the beginning, that is, with the credits. The name of the film (or rather, his Font of the) Copied from an obscure film "Female police officers" in 1974.
But the rest of the font caption "Pulp Fiction" follows the typography from the movie "Cabaret" in 1972 with Liza Minnelli.
suitcase
Iconic frame with golden light from the suitcase Tarantino spied a detective 50s "Kiss Me Deadly".
But if black-and-white film Robert Aldrich radiance had practical sense (inside the suitcase was radioactive isotope), the tape Tarantino light has a symbolic value - is pure impersonation MacGuffinMacGuffin - "Wikipedia".
Biblical quote
Bible passage which reads Jules (hero Samuel L. Jackson) Before the next murder is not taken from the Bible, as it might seem. In the book of the prophet Ezekiel there is indeed a 25-chapter and the 17th verse, but it is much shorter. Coincides with it only the end of the monologue Jules:
And I will bring upon them great vengeance with furious rebukes;
And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I will bring upon them, My vengeance.
And before that, in the original verse goes references to the Philistines (ie no "paths of the righteous" and "selfish tyrants"). In fact, Quentin took the text of the Japanese martial arts film "The Bodyguard" in 1976. There psevdobibleyskaya quote is placed in the opening credits, symbolizing the fury of the hero and his quest for justice.
A major role in the Japanese film played Sonny Chiba. Actor Tarantino was so pleased that he later even called him in his film "Kill Bill" on the role of Hattori Hanzō, masters for the production of swords.
Draw a square in the air
When Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace come to the restaurant, Mia says to his companion: "Do not be so ..." - and draws a rectangle with your fingers.
This is hinted at stable expression «Do not be a square», meaning "Do not be a bore" (if literally - "Do not be square").
A reception with the visualization itself dotted rectangle Tarantino borrowed from... "The Flintstones"! In one scene cartoon Betty Rabbl exactly the same gesture described Fred Flintstone.
The scene in the restaurant, I will not go into alone. There, each frame is filled with the spirit of movies and music the '50s and' 60s, beginning with Buddy Holly and ending with Marilyn Monroe, but about sending speak in plain text.
Dance
Later in the restaurant there is one of the most famous scenes of the film - a twist Mia and Vincent at the local dance contest. In this scene, there are two main allusions. According to the statement of frame and some movements are "Eight and a half"Federico Fellini.
And he Tarantino said he was inspired by a fragment of the dance scene from "Gangs of outsiders" Jean-Luc Godard.
"A gang of outsiders" - one of the favorite Tarantino movie. He even named his studio after the original French title of the film - «A Band Apart».
Lips and microphone
Close-up shot of female lips at the microphone copied from the cult film "Warriors" in 1979.
Syringe with epinephrine
The plot when the girl dying of a heroin overdose, saves a shot of adrenaline to the heart, was taken from the documentary "The American Boy". Directed documentaries - Martin Scorsese.
Shots of Uzi
In the episode, when Butch Vincent Vega shoots a machine gun, weapon model pose arrow and frame color tone (brown and black) are repeated fragment movie McQ 1974 with John Wayne.
The scene on the road
Episode when Butch goes out of his apartment after the murder of Vega and Marsellus Wallace sees, crossing the street, too, there was a reason. He copied from the famous film "Psycho" by Alfred Hitchcock.
By the way, you may notice that Marsellus carries two cups of coffee - it just goes to Butch's apartment, where they sat together with the Vega in an ambush. Butch got there a few minutes early and found Vincent surprise, because the bandit thought that his partner returned.
Murder in the bathroom
Frame with killed Vincent Vega (and the fact that Vega falls into the bath after the shooting, tearing of a curtain) repeats a frame from the film "Three Days of the Condor" in 1975.
Motorcycle
Butch motorcycle, which he had borrowed from Zed - a clear allusion to the motorcycle models from the movie "Easy Rider" in 1969.
For the "Easy Rider" motorcycles were made to order in a single copy (now in the museum), so to get the same for the shooting was not possible. But Tarantino easily solved the problem by using a motorcycle, on which were created devices for "Rider», - Harley Davidson Super Glide.
Incidentally, this is not the only reference to the "Easy Rider": the toilet Mia Wallace quoted song Pusher band Steppenwolf, which was based on the movie title case.
cleaner
In the film, there is a character Winston Wolfe by Harvey Keitel - a person who solves problems and gets rid of the undesirable consequences of murders.
Similarly, the same role he played in the movie "Killer" in 1993, playing Victor Cleaner. This is a remake of the French film "La Femme Nikita", where the role played Victor Jean Reno.
Purse
Jules purse, hero Samuel L. Jackson, possesses very characteristic bright inscription. Taking into account the color of the skin Jules, this inscription refers to the title theme of the cult film "Shaft" about African-American cop John Shaft.
The phrase «Bad motherfucker» mentioned in the song, and after the film is stuck for a long time as a designation of a steep and brutal black.
The theme song, by the way, wrote Isaac Hayes (he even got for her "Oscar"), which most of us sign on voice acting Chief of "South Park."
And in the remake of "Shaft" in 2000 the role of the main character played by Samuel L. Jackson. In June this year, by the way, is expected to continue.
Despite the fact that all the films of Quentin Tarantino are made of pieces of other iconic works, they are not just copies, while they themselves have become cult as absolutely independent works. This is the nature of postmodernism - has already started to take things and reassess them according to the author's vision.
We wish Mr. Tarantino's success in his future movies, the more so in the summer we will have another of his work - "What Just Happened».
