Everyone lies
(S) House, MD
We live in a world of lies. We lie to politicians, colleagues, even friends and relatives. We deceive the state, bosses, spouses, and even themselves.
The only difference is the scale. Lies loved one we call the betrayal, lies strangers - fraud.
Everyone lies. Everybody knows that everybody lies. And obediently accept the rules of the "game".
But nobody thinks about the social and psychological causes of fraud. Book "All (the truth) of iniquity" is aimed at trying to understand why and how we are deceiving.
Its author is a PhD in cognitive psychology and business, teacher psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University, founder of the Center for retrospective research - Dan Ariely.
Dan only 45, but he is the author of numerous scientific papers examining the irrational side of human nature. In particular, from his pen came several monographs: "Behavioral economics. Why do people behave irrationally and how to capitalize on this "," Positive irrationality. "
"All (the truth) of sin" - the third book by Dan Ariely. The abstract is written to it: it "... will change our perception of themselves, their actions and the actions of others." Is my perception has changed, I will answer later, but for now the general impression from reading.
Simple Model Of Rational Crime (SMORC)
SMORC - this is a simple model of rational crime. The author of this theory - Gary Becker, the 1992 Nobel Prize "for the extension of microeconomic analysis on several aspects of human behavior and interaction, including nonmarket behavior".
While working in the University of Chicago, in the 60s of the last century, Dr. Becker has developed the so-called simple model of rational crime. According to his concept, a person decides to lie or not to lie (to steal or not to steal) analyzed three aspects:
1. What benefit he will get?
2. What is the likelihood that fraud will be revealed?
3. And what punishment will follow if this happens?
That is, all possible risks are assessed and, if looming on the horizon gain exceeds them, the crime is committed.
In other words, if you know exactly what "slightly" embellished travel does not turn into a dismissal, you are bound to inflate the amount in the report. Conversely, you do not take even a clip from the workplace, knowing that in the office there is a surveillance camera.
Too straightforward and divorced from reality? You're right. And Dan Ariely 250 pages proves that the causes and mechanism of deception much more irrational, than Becker's model.
Advantages books
In particular, his experiments, he showed that the propensity for fraud does not depend on the size of the jackpot torn nor fear of being caught or the opportunity to cover their tracks. A person is much more important to be honest in his own eyes. After all, none of us are born with a deaf conscience.
Description of experiments and their results - the main content of the book. However, some of them seem to be indisputable, while others cause resentment. For example, the relationship between wearing fake things and subsequent fraud for me is not so obvious as to the author. Otherwise there would be a nation of Vietnam was called liars.
However, it should be noted the presentation style of the nature and course of study. Dan asks its readers a lot of questions, makes them talk, to speculate about the outcome of an experiment. This creates a sense of involvement. The reader - not an outside observer, it is - a participant, a member of the research team.
In addition, Dan Ariely is very light and ironic style. Believe me, you do not just smile while reading this book. In particular, when you find yourself in a particular situation.
What was lacking
Yes, I now know that lying is often irrational. It depends on the conflict of interests, the inner rod moral, social groups I belong to, and many other factors. But what do I do with all this?
Reading "All (the truth) about sin," I was waiting for what is about, on the next page, I will give some advice on how to deal with the liars around and, most importantly, how to overcome a liar.
And though at times flashed the shadow of "copyright advice" (in particular, the theory of self-control as a muscle set out in Kelly McGonigal book "Willpower"), The miracle did not happen.
In addition, the book will not be affected (or rather affected, but casual), a very important point. The so-called white lies. Confess to treason or to lie, but to preserve the family? Say terminally ill or leave his diagnosis in tranquil ignorance? Complex issues. And perhaps, deserve their own book.
And responding to the question posed at the beginning: if my perception changed? - answer "No".
Summary
Everyone lies. And Dan Ariely, though, and makes the process more understandable, but does not answer how to deal with it. However, I think he did not pursue this goal in front of you.
However, after reading the book is not heavy residue on the shower. There is no feeling of despair or disgust. We live in a world of lies. And, alas, we accept the rules of the "game".
Dan Ariely book "All (the truth) of sin" does not make you and others at once honest, but it will help to understand the origins of the irrationality of deception, and the world will become a little clearer.
