In the book How Champions Think psychologist Bob Rotella (Bob Rotella) answers the question of what champions thoughts differ from the thoughts of ordinary people. We chose from the book of the most useful information.
It is difficult not to be skeptical of the book "How to think of champions." Nevertheless, I decided to buy this book on Amazon and read - quite good reviews made me do it.
But first, I decided to read the biography of Bob Rotella. It turns out that he has written eight bestsellers, teaching sports psychology at the University of Virginia, and even managed to get a personal psychologist LeBron James (LeBron James). If only to squeeze the most useful of the book, that's what happens.
You - your main opponent
Rotella believes that the main difference between the champions from the rest - is not the ability to set goals and reach them the ability. As an example, in a business famous quote:
The idea is worthless. Its realization - that is important.
And prominent figures set goals that, at first glance, seem to be impossible. If you are a sales manager, and want to increase their commissions three times, you start with setting goals. For example, do twice as many calls before noon or triple the number of meetings.
Afraid of failure, people set simple goals, the achievement of which they are confident. Rotella did not agree with that - it is better to put an unrealistic goal and fulfill our plans by half than to achieve a simple goal.
Positive attitude is more important than you think
In 1954, cross-country experts have stated that it is impossible to run a mile in less than four minutes. As a result, athletes do not even try to do it. But only Roger Bannister (Roger Bannister)hard work and perseverance could refute the words of experts, and the first time ever run a mile in 3.59,4 minutes. So he opened his eyes, the other runners, proving that the impossible is possible. Subsequently, his record was broken several times.
Author of the book How Champions Think believes that pessimism and failure follow each other. At the same time, optimism will not ensure victory. He is akin to faith: you do not have confidence that everything will turn out, however, it helps to overcome the difficulties.
How to become confident
It is believed that confidence comes with victory. In this case, each of us can win for the first time?
Rotella cites the example of LeBron James. At the start of a career in basketball was a low percentage of three-point contact - 29%. To improve your results, LeBron consulted with many people, in particular with the author.
Rotella advised James to do 400 variations of three-point shots every day. By repeating the same operations as well as its visualization basketball goal could improve the percentage of hits in two and a half times.
Habits as a way to reach a goal
If you often lose, it is difficult to think of future victories. Such a state in psychology is called learned helplessness. According to Rotella, all a matter of habit. By the way, as well considers and psychologist Charles Duhigg (Charles Duhigg).
The first step is to analyze the habits that relate to your goal. For example, you want to lose weight. The key habit that can stand in the way - overeating. From it difficult to get rid of, so it's best to try to replace it with a positive habit. If you reward myself with food for their achievements, try to change the award at something else.
