I love this class of devices, and despite the fact that the iPad is cool, and now the compact, I prefer to read it on the device "electronic ink". First - they are incomparably longer live independently, and secondly - they are lighter and more compact, and in the third - I often read in the open air, and before the sun, even the middle band, any active display folds.
Immediately reported with than I can compare. I have long used two such devices: Sony PRS-505 and Kindle Keyboard (3). There were a few devices of other brands, but not for long. They were at one time replaced the Kindle. Last but not least to resolve the "stick" to the Amazon affected infrastructure.
Immediately after the official announcement of the release of Kindle Paperwhite I knew I wanted to at least try the device in the case. But getting it in his hands, he could not refuse - a fantastically well made instrument. I would call it the iPhone in the world "e-readers".
I'll start with the pros:
- excellent build quality, dense apparatus, soft-touch plastic of high quality
- very sensitive touch screen, there was no problem with its use
- speed - lag just not yet appeared
- resolution and clarity of the font compared to the competition
- the browser is usable, which is strange, for "ink"
- illumination (with the proviso, which below)
- good battery life, Amazon did manage to provide a decent time (not had charged three weeks with daily use and switched WIFI), even with the backlight, included 80%
- price
And now a little about the disadvantages:
- the backlight is not perfectly flat: the bottom of the screen there is a specific "shadow" due to the distribution of light from the three light diodes
- and a soft-touch, and semi-glossy plastic around the screen to catch fingerprints
And now a few details. As you can see, the device made a very good impression on me. Scrolling almost instantly, backlight makes me almost independent of lighting conditions, the device fits well in the hand and gives the impression of well-made high-end device. According to the last parameter Kindle 3 lags badly: it was easy, fast, convenient, but the "fragility" in it was present from birth.
I have already said about the non-ideal lighting, but for me it is not critical or even prominent criterion since the "shadow", marked on the web more than once, strongly depend on the brightness settings, and from the outside lighting. So I try not to read in the dark, I almost did not come across them. It is said that some instances cope with the task a little better than others. But the lights in any case gives comfort and convenience.
I will not list formal characteristics of the device, but I will answer some of the questions that may bother people in Russia and Ukraine.
• The device is beautifully displays Russian text without flashing (if they are encoded in utf-8). Ukrainian texts I have not tried, but expect the same.
• 3G works in Russia (at least for the delivery of the purchased books)
• Amazon sells books Russian cardholders with no problems
• MOBI format supported by the device, is widespread, which allows to download books directly with the device using the embedded browser (WIFI)
• Calibre and copes with the conversion of a large number of text formats, and sending them to the wireless Kindle.
Now, a few poor quality photos. I warn that the contrast for better detection of artefacts increased and alive they are not as noticeable.
The device itself is a 28% gray
"Shadows"
How does light when viewed from the end
Comparison of a white sheet and Kindle Paperwhite with almost winter, but day (!) In the light of 2 meters from the window
Conclusion: if you are going to change or purchase reader, from my heart I can recommend Kindle Paperwhite.
