Background music can significantly impair your creativity

Psychologists various British and Swedish universities disproved the popular theory that music promotes creative thinking and enhances productivity. In their view, everything is quite the opposite.

To prove they had a kind of experiment in which subjects were asked to solve the "verbal" problems. For example, all of them three words has been demonstrated: dress, dial and flower (Dress dial and flower). They had to pick one word associative, allowing three others to form words.

One solution to this puzzle was the word sunAllowing form sundress, sundial and sunflower (Sundress, a sundial, and sunflower).

The test was conducted in several stages: in a quiet environment, under the instrumental music without words, under the background songs of foreign artists and the music with the familiar lyrics. It turned out that the ability to think creatively and to solve such problems is significantly reduced when any music.

It does not matter whether the melody picks you up and did you know artist - the greatest efficiency is achieved only in peaceful conditions, or even with some slight noise. As an example they brought the library noise is perceived as a "steady state of the environment."

Psychologists believe that this result is due to the fact that music breaks the verbal working memory needed to understand and save the information in your mind. Therefore, to better cope with creative tasks, they recommend to abandon any music.
