Fraudsters are using iOS 17 feature to spoof caller ID

We tell you how to distinguish a real “Possibly Bank Security Service” from a fake.
Yandex experts reported about a new scam that relies on an iOS 17 feature. An editor is used for this contact poster - essentially, profile cards for calls and SMS, which can be configured by every iPhone user with the latest firmware.
If you enter a name through this editor, it will be displayed when you call. But instead of your first and last name, you can write text similar to the information from the caller ID: for example, “Important call from the police” or “Bank security service.” Considering that many people answer the call almost immediately, it is easy to mistake this fake message for a real message from caller ID.
To learn to distinguish caller ID from a contact poster, pay attention to the position of the text and the number of blocks. If the text is written under the phone number, and at the top there is the name of the caller ID, then everything is in order. If there is only one block of text and it is located above the number, then this is a contact poster and you should be careful.
This scheme works because fraudulent phones appear in caller ID databases with a delay, and the real ID will not work at first.
Representatives of Yandex have already talked about Apple's problem and proposed a solution: to allow the display of a contact poster only if the number is already in the user's phone book.
