The purpose of the course is to introduce students in a fun way to the basic science of enzymes, enzymology and microbiology. The course forms in students the scientific foundations of perception of many processes in technology and real life. Today it is almost impossible to imagine agriculture and medicine without the use of enzymes and microorganisms. The enzyme alpha-amylase breaks down starch, and the resulting glucose can be fermented by yeast to produce edible alcohol. The discovery of penicillin, obtained by microbiological synthesis, opened the era of antibiotics and reduced mortality from infectious diseases hundreds of times. The discovery of insulin and its production using recombinant microorganisms has been saving the lives of many diabetics for many decades. Finally, modern biopharmaceuticals and enzyme replacement therapy have radically changed approaches to the treatment of many diseases that until recently were considered incurable.
