The course was developed at the Department of Historical Informatics of the Faculty of History of Moscow State University for employees of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It consists of two sections and is focused on acquiring practical skills in working with software for content analytical and statistical data processing in relation to specific historical problems research.
The purpose of the professional development program is to introduce students to the methodology and experience of content analytical research; with the computerized content analysis program MAXQDA, as a method of automated processing of large volumes of text information; with the basics of the R programming language, which is actively used for processing and analyzing statistical analysis, as well as for visualizing data and the results obtained.
Course objectives:
- give an overview of the experience of using content analysis in historical research based on materials from narrative sources;
- consider the conceptual apparatus of content analysis;
- show the stages of working with the MAXQDA program: creating a system of categories and indicators, text markup, analysis, visualization; perform independent work with the program using the proposed source and discuss the results obtained;
- introduce the basics of the R programming language, as well as software environment tools for working with data from statistical sources: installing R, creating a dataset, how to manage data and application
- statistical analysis methods (descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis) using R language tools.
Admission requirements: Persons with higher or incomplete higher education in the humanities - history, political science, cultural studies, philology, journalism, - working or planning to work in scientific and educational institutions of the humanities spheres.
