“Dynamic volcanology” - course 2800 rub. from MSU, training 15 weeks. (4 months), Date: December 3, 2023.
Miscellaneous / / December 06, 2023
Volcanic eruptions are large-scale natural disasters that have repeatedly threatened the existence of civilization. Their study requires the joint efforts of scientists from different specialties. The training course, consisting of 11 lectures, will examine the structure of the Earth and the patterns of distribution of volcanoes on its surface, the causes of volcanism and the evolution of volcanism in the history of the Earth. Examples of the most significant eruptions will be considered and their modern classification will be given. Methods for studying eruptions are based on both direct observations (monitoring) and laboratory studies composition and properties of magma, minerals crystallizing from it, as well as numerical modeling of the evolution of magmatic systems.

The course will cover the simplest hydrodynamic models of volcanic eruptions. An explanation will be given for many of the observed patterns associated with the periodicity of eruptions and changes in their character. As examples, the eruptions of volcanoes Vesuvius (Italy), Shiveluch (Kamchatka), Mount St. Helens (USA), Soufriere Hills (Caribbean islands) will be considered.
