Gamification - course 2990 rub. from 4brain, training 5 lessons, Date: December 3, 2023.
Miscellaneous / / December 03, 2023
What is gamification? Some call it just another marketing technique, while others predict it will become the most popular trend of the near future, which literally everyone will talk about. Be that as it may, interest in this phenomenon is due to the desire of people to find a means by which they can increase interest in any activities, the involvement of employees of organizations in their work, as well as make the system of rewards and incentives in companies more open and accessible.
In addition, if we take into account the results of research conducted by Gallup more recently (they showed that 71% of working US residents either “not involved” or “not really involved” in the work being done), gamification is gaining increasing attention among managers HR departments.
This is how research company Gartner interprets gamification: gamification is a concept based on the use of game mechanics, methods, principles and techniques for non-gaming activities, such as recruitment, education or health promotion life. Gartner experts believe that in the next few years, over 70% of the largest corporations will have at least one a gamified application aimed at solving a variety of tasks, from mastering skills to improving overall health body.
It is also interesting to know that in the recent report “The Future of Gamification”, prepared by Elon University and Pew Internet, refers to a survey conducted by Internet experts on the topic of how seriously gaming methods can improve the processes of involvement, motivation and training. It turned out that 53% of respondents believe that by 2020, gamification will be used in workplaces in the areas of health care, communications, marketing, education and many others.
Gamification professional Karl Kapp believes that the essence of gamification lies in how quickly it will spread among representatives of all generations of people around the world. He also argues that one of the most important elements of this technique - rewards - can keep people involved in projects and motivate interpersonal interaction.
The basis of gamification is a fairly large number of psychological and behavioral principles, but among all their many, four most important ones can be identified:
1. The principle of motivation.
2. The principle of unexpected discoveries and rewards.
3. The principle of status.
4. Reward principle.
When preparing the course, we studied a lot of relevant literature. In the process, we selected what seemed to us the most important and significant, adapted the material for more convenient perception and assimilation, and also provided practical recommendations from the experience of people who have been involved in gamification. As a result, we have collected the most relevant information worthy of attention and application.
Lesson 1. Game motivation
We chose motivation as the topic of the first lesson, because... This is what gamification as a methodology is based on. Motivation is the engine of human progress, both on a personal level and on a global scale, and the knowledge that in general, can serve as an incentive for different categories of people, will allow you to introduce game elements and create your projects in the most effective. The lesson offers a description of motivation as the main driving force, explains the need to manage motivation and discusses the most effective form of activity management. In addition, theories of motivation that contribute to a better understanding of gamification will be presented. Finally, we'll introduce you to the concept of flow state and its importance in gamification.
Lesson 2. Game elements of gamification
As one should assume, the system for introducing game mechanisms into non-game activities cannot consist of one or two elements. In reality, there are a lot of them, and the absence of any one can radically affect the entire gamification process. For this reason, we will introduce you to the necessary elements. From the second lesson you will learn about what a game is and what its features are, as well as what components should be present in it - this is the first part of the lesson. And in the second we will talk about the PBL triad - the three most important elements that should be present in the gamification of any process.
Lesson 3. Game mechanics
You probably yourself know that there are an incredible number of games today. All of them are aimed at different categories of users and players and differ in their own characteristics - game mechanics. The third lesson is dedicated to them, and it is exclusively practical in nature. In it we will tell you about several dozen different game mechanics, from very simple to more complex. It’s interesting that the lesson is based on materials from thematic portals that specialize in creating games, and each mechanic is accompanied by an example that makes it easier to understand its essence.
Lesson 4. Types of Players
Any game implies the presence of players in it. But players, like the games themselves, can be different, depending on many psychological, behavioral and personal characteristics. In addition, each game should be designed so that players of all categories can and want to take part in it. They will be discussed in the lesson. As an information base for this lesson, we took the classification of player psychotypes created by one of the pioneers in the field of gamification, Richard Bartle. You will learn about the four groups of players and their characteristics, understand the differences between them and how to balance them in the game. In addition, we will talk about how people's psychotypes are determined and give some additional information for thought.
Lesson 5. Game design
The fifth lesson will help you put all the elements discussed so far together. In other words, it will become clear from it how a gamification system is created, what needs to be done, what to be guided by and what to pay attention to. You will be offered the steps to build a gaming system from Kevin Werbach, a professional and famous gamification specialist, as well as several examples of choosing game mechanics based on goals project. In conclusion, we will talk about how game elements are introduced into the system. And as an addition, you can get acquainted with the most common mistakes in gamification and tips on how to avoid them.
