Mesopotamia
MARCH 06 20:00
What associations does Mesopotamia evoke for you? Tigris, Euphrates, ziggurats, Hanging Gardens of Babylon - often the list ends here. In fact, it was here, in Mesopotamia, that the world's first poem was written, one of the first sets of laws was compiled, and architectural designs were invented that engineers still use today. And even the tradition of signing a document appeared here.
At the webinar, we will take a closer look at the culture of Mesopotamia, learn about the first poetess and the laws of the Babylonian king Hammurabi. Let's understand where the European days of the week came from, and also who was the very first librarian in history and what significance the Tower of Babel has for our culture

Egypt
MARCH 09 20:00
Today we admire the pyramids, marvel at the mummies, watch adventure films about searching for treasures in the tombs of the pharaohs and have no doubt about the greatness of Egyptian culture. It has become close and familiar to us since school, and therefore it is difficult to believe that for a long time Egypt remained in the shadow of the culture of Mesopotamia - the cradle of civilization.
At the webinar we will get acquainted with the art of one of the most ancient civilizations on the planet. Let's talk about why the ancient Greeks came to Egypt and how the Egyptian campaign ended for Napoleon in the 19th century. Let's find out why we love pyramids so much, and not only the ancient ones, and what relation mermaids have to Ancient Egypt. Finally, we will find out under what scenario the Egyptian civilization perished. Spoiler: later this scenario repeated itself more than once.

Greece
MARCH 13 20:00
At school we learn that the Greeks gave the world the Olympic Games, theater, music theory and literary genres. And that modern democracy has borrowed key ideas precisely from ancient Greek ideas about the political and personal freedom of a citizen. But we rarely think about how these discoveries affect us today.
In the webinar we will learn why ancient Greek culture became the foundation for European civilization. Let's find out what democracy is in the minds of the ancient Greeks and whether it is possible in the modern world. Let's figure out what the Russian alphabet can tell about ancient civilization. Let's find out what we weren't taught at school about ancient Greek myths and why they perfectly illustrate Freud's theory of psychoanalysis.

Rome: the main discoveries of the ancient state
MARCH 16 20:00
Rome is not only about Roman law and technology, which you can still admire today, but also about many valuable ideas. It was the Romans who invented many of the familiar components of modern cities. And it was the Roman poets who retold Greek myths for us and preserved Greek culture for us.
At the webinar we will find out what state and cultural ideas were born in the Eternal City and in what form they have reached us. Let's find out whether “all roads lead to Rome”, how to read Roman poets correctly and what you need to remember when placing sports bets.

Rome: influence on modern culture
MARCH 21 20:00
Our cities still keep traces of Rome: streets, sculptures, buildings. And we, as their inhabitants, do the same thing throughout the day as the ancient Romans did two thousand years ago. Even in conversations we use phrases that were already uttered before us in the Eternal City.
At the webinar, we will look at European culture through the prism of Rome, we will understand whether we are so different from its ancient inhabitants, and we will find out what in a modern city would seem native and familiar to them.
Lecturer: Natalya Vostrikova
Ancient Celts
MARCH 23 20:00
We know about “Celtic music”, “Celtic dances” and characteristic “Celtic patterns”. But we don’t fully understand who these same Celts originally were, where they lived and what they did. We will get to know their daily life, religion and culture at the webinar.
Let's take a trip to Ireland in the first centuries of our era and find out what the Irish of that time thought about themselves and their neighbors. Let's find out how the famous Celtic symbols appeared, what the Celtic calendar looked like and why the Celtic goddesses married Roman gods.
Lecturer: Ksenia Kudenko
Japan and China
MARCH 27 20:00
Globalization leads to shifting cultural boundaries. In Russia, Germany and the USA they know about the Chinese horoscope, watch Hayao Miyazaki’s cartoons, arrange apartments according to Feng Shui and fold cranes using the origami technique. And someone, maybe, even learned Zen. Japanese and Chinese cultures are mixed with European ones, and it can sometimes be difficult to separate them.
In the webinar, we will go from the four great Chinese inventions - the compass, gunpowder, paper and printing - to modern Japanese popular culture, including manga and anime.
Lecturer: Anna Pushakova
South America
MARCH 30 20:00
The Spaniards destroyed many traces of ancient civilizations in South America. But thanks to the ingenuity of local residents, today we can see the influence of Aztec and Inca culture on the lifestyle of modern Mexicans and Peruvians.
During the lecture we will go on a journey to the pre-Columbian civilizations of the Mayans, Incas and Aztecs and learn how their cultures differed. Let's find out why the Incas struggled with literacy and what the Mayans used as money. Let's see what drink the Aztecs revered and find Aztec traditions in modern Mexico.
