Miscellaneous / / December 02, 2023
Learning languages trains our minds and contributes to the development of our capabilities: creative and intellectual perception, the ability to solve several problems simultaneously and switch between them. Marianne Wolfe in her book “Proust and the Squid” writes the following about the Japanese language: “Modern Neuroimaging of the brain shows how differently the brain can be organized for different systems letters. <...> Japanese readers are a particularly interesting example, because the brain of every Japanese must master two sharply different writing systems: one of them is a very effective syllabary alphabet (kana), <...>; the second is an older logographic script (kanji), <...>. When reading kanji, Japanese readers use “routes” [in the brain] similar to those used by the Chinese. When they read kana, they use pathways similar to those used when reading the alphabet."
