We typed, we typed, our fingers were tired. Introducing a distance learning course on typography and layout for designers, editors and developers.
You've probably already read a ton of books about modular grids, studied the 1200px framework, and know by heart how to calculate a multiple baseline grid. Or perhaps you're just designing your first website. Perhaps, like us once, you are unable to assemble a normal layout - with or without a grid. You look at the beauty of Ruder, Müller-Brockmann, Sagmeister, Rand and Frankie, draw columns, put pictures in squares, and what comes out is crooked. It is not clear how exactly to assemble an expressive layout with a durable design.
Our course advocates an approach to layout as a design. As in architecture, some text and picture designs work better than others. We'll show you how to predictably build a strong layout using modularity, anchor objects, the inside/outside rule, reference modules, and generic designs. And then it’s no longer so important whether your layout has a modular grid or not - but we’ll tell you about it too.
An entire block of the course is devoted to style and mood: how to achieve expressiveness, and not end up with something Apple-like with thin fonts, gray blocks and rulers. Participants learn to conduct a cultural search, express mood using font, color, illustrations, arrangement and relationships of elements.
The course will be useful for beginners and experienced designers, editors, developers and managers. Prior knowledge of typography is helpful but not required. To complete practical tasks, it is advisable to be able to work in some kind of graphic editor.
Distance course
In a distance learning course, almost all the time with the teacher is devoted to practical exercises, and the theory is prepared for independent study. Every Monday, participants have access to video lectures and text materials in the study room for self-study. And during the practical lesson, they reinforce the theory of the week with specially selected tasks and review them with the teacher.
10 practical tasks
Each block of theory is reinforced by practice. Course participants complete assignments and comment on each other’s work, and the teacher analyzes good moves and mistakes.
