What is jamevue and why do we sometimes feel like we are seeing familiar things for the first time?
Miscellaneous / / November 26, 2023
According to research, 97% of people at least once in their life encountered with deja vu. This is the feeling that we have once seen or experienced what we are seeing or experiencing right now, although we understand that in reality this is impossible. The déjà vu effect can be thought of as a collision of two streams of consciousness, which is why it takes us by surprise. We feel something familiar, as if we have already lived in this moment before, but we have no evidence of this.
There is also a rarer, radically opposite phenomenon of deja vu - jamevu.
What does jamevue mean?
While deja vu is a translation from the French déjà vu, which translates as “already seen”, jamevu comes from the expression jamais vu, that is, “never seen”. So called the feeling that we are dealing with something unfamiliar, although in fact we know it well.
For example, every day you communicate with a colleague with whom you have worked for many years, or use some word whose meaning is very clear to you. But one day you see this colleague or this word, and it seems completely new and unknown to you. Although this sensation usually lasts from a few seconds to several minutes, it can be very frightening.
Why does jamevue occur?
The exact reason is unknown. But scientists believe that it is associated with the work of the temporal lobe brain, which plays a big role in how our memory works.
Most often, jamevue appears when we process some information and at the same time are distracted by something else. Chronic stress and sleep disorders can also trigger this feeling, as they affect mental health and make a person more susceptible to experiences of this kind.
At the same time, we are able to create jamevu or a similar feeling on our own. Perhaps you yourself have accidentally done something similar. For example, when you wrote the same word many times and at some point it began to seem to you that it was unfamiliar to you or written incorrectly. During one very small research six of his participants had to look at different words for three minutes. After 60 seconds, some letters began to look meaningless and unfamiliar to them, and after the allotted time, the words were already perceived as a set of letters.
Although the phenomenon of jamevu requires further study, many researchers agree that it is the result of a temporary breakdown in the connection between memory and perception. We are talking, in particular, about two types of memory - declarative and non-declarative, or procedural. The first includes everything we can consciously remember, such as facts or stories. The second one stores our sensory sensations and sensory experiences that we are not aware of. Scientists believe that jamevue occurs when electrical activity in the temporal lobe of the brain, which is responsible for memory, is disrupted. The phenomenon of déjà vu is associated with the functioning of this same area of the brain.
When jamevu appears
In a state of severe anxiety, our brain goes into overdrive to protect us from psychological trauma. Therefore, we are most likely to experience jamevu during times of stress.
However, this feeling can appear anytime, anywhere. It can be considered a kind of memory without recognition. Imagine that you meet a celebrity on the street and are sure that you have seen this face somewhere before, but you do not understand who it is, as if this person is a complete stranger to you. Your perception and memory cannot communicate with each other, so your brain cannot make sense of the situation.
Is jamevue dangerous and how to deal with it?
This feeling may be mistaken for dissociation and delusion, depending on the person's current mental state, medical history, and other factors. However, while delusion is a false belief, jamevue is rather the absence of any belief. A person only momentarily ceases to recognize people, places and things that are familiar to him.
When we encounter jamevu, we may feel torn off from your surroundings and even your body. This is why there is confusion with dissociation. However, jamevu does not last long. In addition, it is easy to adjust - just pause, gather your strength and continue doing what you were doing.
But it should be remembered that jamevu is rare. And if you experience it every day, it could be a sign of a more serious problem. In this case, you should contact a therapist who will assess your condition and, if necessary, refer you to neurologist.

In vain. You need to treat sources critically, and not take the first thing that matches your idea of the world. The same applies to the “History” of Herodotus, and, excuse me, the Koran and the Bible. The historian's job is complex analysis based on several types of sources. With obligatory critical assessment. And so, forgive me, you accused the author of creating new myths by debunking historical myths and creating your own here.
