Seal scientists in “hats” discovered a canyon 2 kilometers deep under Antarctica

Pinnipeds have become real astronauts of the underwater world.
Scientists have come up with many innovative ways to explore different parts of the Earth and space - from huge telescopes to laser lidars. Now they have turned to marine mammals for help to explore the depths of the ocean.
The first such research animals were selected southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) and Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) - a total of 265 individuals. Authors of the new research secure data collection devices were attached to their heads, and the pinnipeds have already made their first big discovery - they discovered an underground canyon about two kilometers deep in the Vincennes Bay area in Antarctica. They named him Mirunga-Nuyina.
The devices, which look like little hats, record depth every four seconds whenever the mammals are in the water. They can also measure temperature and collect some other data. The authors of the work have already conducted more than 500 thousand such dives.
In some regions, we found that approximately 25% of previous ocean depth estimates were incorrect. Sometimes seals dived more than 1,000 meters deeper than the estimated distance to the bottom.

The new data could help reveal more about the melting of glaciers in the area and reveal the thinnest areas of the ice. With the help of seals, scientists also hope to determine the extent of the impact of global warming on Antarctica.
