Get ready: backups will soon start using up space in the cloud.
WhatsApp added Google Drive backup in 2015. This function allows you to upload all correspondence and media files to cloud storage, so that you can then was restored on a new device (or on an old one if you temporarily switched to another account). For 8 years, this feature was provided to Android users for free and did not consume Google's storage limit, but that will soon change.
On WhatsApp and Google confirmedthat soon unlimited backups will become a thing of the past. Users with free Google accounts will have to set aside some of their 15 GB of Google Drive storage for backups - which is also used for Gmail and Google Photos.
Users who do not have enough space for backups will still be able to transfer data to a new device: WhatsApp in the summer implemented A new chat transfer mechanism that doesn't rely on Google Drive or your computer.
WhatsApp beta users will lose access to unlimited storage in December, while the stable version will roll out the change gradually starting in January 2024.
It is noted that the new rules will not affect users with Google Workspace accounts registered using corporate and educational programs (in other words, provided by a company, school or university).
