MRO reconnaissance vehicle photographed a huge “hole” on Mars
Miscellaneous / / November 07, 2023
NASA MRO Reconnaissance Orbiter sent image of a huge hole on the surface of Mars. The “Hole” is located in the eastern part of the planet’s northern hemisphere in the area of the Utopia Plain.
It was formed as a result of the collapse of a lava tube, which happens quite often on Mars. There are especially many of them in the impact crater Utopia Planitia, where they represent a whole system of channels and depressions of Hephaestus.
Similar tunnels lead under the surface of the Red Planet. Scientists believe that they can protect people and equipment from radiation, temperature changes and even from falling meteorites. Therefore, such objects are considered as potential shelters for future bases.
By the way, similar phenomena also occur on Earth and the Moon. As for our satellite, China even
plans a mission to explore lunar lava tubes and build a base in one of them.More materials about space🛰
