Performance monsters on the inside, familiar design on the outside.
Early in the morning of October 31, Apple held a presentation “Scary fast”, at which it presented the M3 series processors and the first devices with them. Here are the main announcements.
Apple M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max
The new generation of Apple Silicon chips is made using a 3nm process technology - just like the A17 Pro in iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Their GPU supports the new “Dynamic Caching” technology. It limits the use of RAM for specific tasks so that no program takes more than it needs. This will allow you to allocate more memory for heavy tasks, including games. Hardware ray tracing is also supported for more realistic lighting in games.
Otherwise, the chips are 10-20% faster than the M2 series and 40-65% faster than the M1. Here are their main characteristics:
- M3: 8 CPU cores, 10 GPU cores, up to 24 GB of combined memory;
- M3 Pro: 11 or 12 CPU cores, 14 or 18 GPU cores, up to 36 GB of combined memory;
- M3 Max: 14 or 16 CPU cores, 30 or 40 GPU cores, up to 128 GB of combined memory.
The top-end M3 Ultra chip has not yet been shown - we should probably expect it at one of the next presentations.
MacBook Pro 14" and 16"
The 14-inch M3-powered MacBook Pro became the base model in the series, with the 13-inch model with TouchBar gone. More expensive and powerful variants with M3 Pro and M3 Max processors are also available, available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes.
The new models have a battery life of 22 hours, and Apple notes that performance will be the same when running on AC power or on battery power.
There are no visual differences: it’s still the same redesign 2021 with bangs and Liquid Retina XDR screen. True, the displays were made a little brighter - 600 nits versus 100 nits in previous models. In HDR mode, brightness can reach 1600 nits.
Only the new Space Black color will help you stand out - a matte black color that is only available on laptops with M3 Pro and M3 Max processors. Also, the top versions will be available in silver. The 14-inch model with the M3 gets space gray and silver.
Sales of laptops start on November 7, prices are as follows:
- MacBook Pro 14” with M3 – from $1,599 (≈147,300 rubles);
- MacBook Pro 14” with M3 Pro – from $1,999 (≈184,100 rubles);
- MacBook Pro 16” with M3 Pro – from $2,499 (≈230,200 rubles);
- MacBook Pro 14” with M3 Max – from $3,199 (≈294,700 rubles);
- MacBook Pro 16” with M3 Max – from $3,499 (≈322,300 rubles).
iMac 24"
This version does not differ in appearance from the model 2021. Even the screen is the same: 24-inch with 4.5K Retina resolution. The main update was the M3 processor; the more advanced M3 Pro and M3 Max are not available for the monoblock.
In addition to a more powerful processor and ray tracing, there are a couple of other improvements. The new product supports more modern Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 (versus Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0). Also, the computer can now add up to 24 GB of combined memory and up to 2 TB of storage - the model with M1 supported a maximum of 16 GB of combined and 1 TB of internal memory.
The updated iMac 24 will go on sale on November 7, prices remain the same as the previous version: $1,299 (≈119,600 rubles) for the version with 8 GB of memory and 256 GB storage.
