More than 500 years ago, a girl was sacrificed.
A team of Polish and Peruvian scientists working with the Swedish sculptor presented reconstruction of the face of the most famous mummy of Peru, which is also called Juanita and the Ice Maiden of the Incas.
The frozen remains were discovered in 1995 at an altitude of more than 6,000 meters on the snow-capped Ampato volcano in the Andes. The analysis showed that during her life it was a girl of 13-15 years old who was sacrificed during the ritual. This happened between 1440 and 1450 AD. That is, more than 500 years ago.
With a height of 140 centimeters, she weighed 35 kilograms. Judging by the contents of her stomach, she was eating well. The cause of death was a strong blow to the head in the area of the right occipital lobe.
The bust is made of silicone. It depicts a young woman with pronounced cheekbones, black eyes and tanned skin. Swedish archaeologist and sculptor Oscar Nilsson, who worked on the reconstruction, noted that it took him about 400 hours to model the face.
Previously, scientists have created an exact copy of the skull of the Ice Maiden of the Incas. To do this, they used body scans, DNA studies, ethnological characteristics, age and complexion.
Juanita was not the only child whom the Incas sacrificed high in the mountains. More than 14 human remains, including three children, were discovered in different areas of the Andes.
