Qualcomm is official released Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The flagship platform is built on a 4nm process technology and is focused on improvements in artificial intelligence technologies, gaming capabilities, audio functions and graphics.
Snapdragon Gen 3 is 30% faster and 20% more efficient than the previous Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The eight-core processor features one main Cortex-X4 core operating at up to 3.3 GHz, five high-performance cores with a frequency of up to 3.2 GHz and two energy-efficient cores with a clock speed of up to 2.3 GHz.
The chip supports LPDDR5x memory up to 4800 MHz with a capacity of up to 24 GB and Wi-Fi 7 interface up to 6 GHz, including 802.11be, 802.11ax, 80211ac and 80211a/bg/n. And the built-in X75 5G modem works with frequencies below 6 GHz, also known as Sub-6GHz, and mmWave.
AI takes center stage in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. NPU supports multimodal generative AI models with 10 billion parameters, including popular large language models (LLM) and computer vision models (LVM).
On smartphones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, it will be possible to run chatbots similar to ChatGPT, generative Stable Diffusion models, and speech-to-text conversion systems.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is also compatible with Unreal Engine 5.2 and supports 240 frames per second in games on displays with the appropriate refresh rate. Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 can generate frames for smoother picture playback. The graphics chip itself is 25% faster, 25% more power efficient and provides 40% better ray tracing.
Audiophiles will be happy to know that the new chip allows lossless 24-bit music streaming at 96 kHz via Bluetooth. By the way, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is compatible with the latest Bluetooth 5.4 standard.
The new processor will appear in the flagships of Asus, Honor, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Redmi, RedMagic, Sony, vivo, ZTE and, of course, Xiaomi. It is Xiaomi that will release the first smartphones with this chip, already October 26.
