What are the benefits of vertical tabs?

Vertical tabs in the browser are not located on the top panel, as usual, but in the form of a list on the side. And this solution provides many benefits. Firstly, it’s easier to find the desired tab among many others, since their headings remain readable. This is especially convenient when working with pages of the same site that have the same icons.

Additionally, most modern resources look like “empty space on the right and left, text in the middle,” which doesn’t look good on wide screens. A panel with vertical tabs will allow you to use empty areas more efficiently. It will also save horizontal space, which will please owners of small monitors and laptops. How to enable vertical tabs

This feature is not implemented in all browsers. And then special extensions come to the rescue.

Chrome

IN Chrome There is no built-in support for vertical tabs, but they can be enabled using add-ons. There are three extensions for this purpose - all simply called Vertical Tabs.

The first two use Chrome's sidebar - which means your vertical tabs will always be on the right. The third “draws” them directly on the panel of the loading web page, so that it can also place the list on the left side of the screen. Try all the options and decide what suits you best.

Unfortunately, you can't remove the top tab bar in Chrome, so your open sites will be duplicated on the top and side. But this can be fixed by switching the browser to full screen mode. To do this, press F11 (Windows) or Control + Command + F (Mac).

Firefox

Firefox doesn't have vertical tabs, although Mozilla does promised add them someday. Therefore, for now we have to be content with a third-party extension. There are four great options that add a list of open sites to browser: Tree Style Tab, Tab Center Reborn, Sidebery and Vertical Tabs Reloaded.

Just install one of them and you will get vertical tabs. But there is one catch: these extensions cannot hide the panel on top. However, you can still remove it if you use this instructions.

The method is somewhat complicated, as it will require you to edit custom Firefox style files. Additionally, changes may be rolled back when you update your browser. But if you want to customize Firefox to the fullest and are not afraid of difficulties, give it a try.

Vivaldi

Vivaldi has native support for vertical tabs, so you don't have to install any add-ons. Click “Menu” → “Settings” → “Tabs” and select the “Left” or “Right” option - whichever is more convenient for you.

Edge

IN browser from Microsoft There are also built-in vertical tabs. To enable this option, click on the sidebar icon in the top left corner of your browser window header and select "Enable Vertical Tabs."

Opera

At one time, Opera was the first browser to feature vertical tabs. With the transition to the Chrome engine, the Norwegian combine lost most of its functions. However, you can add a sidebar with open sites in Opera using an extension.
