How to get to Uglich and where to stay
Uglich is located in the Yaroslavl region, and the easiest way to get here is from Yaroslavl. The distance from the regional center to Uglich is a little more than 100 km, so travel time is unlikely to exceed 1.5–2 hours. But many tourists travel here from Moscow or St. Petersburg by rail. Or they sail along the Volga by boat from Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm and other cities.
There are many hotels and mini-hotels, apartments, guest houses and hostels. The Volzhskaya Riviera hotel, which is located in the historical center on the banks of the Volga, has high ratings. Also popular among tourists are the Voznesenskaya, AZIMUT Hotel and Uspenskaya hotels. The cost of a room for two guests is from 2,500–3,500 rubles per day.
You can also stay in the hostels “In Uglich”, “Uley” or in the small hotel “Mini-Hotel Duk”. Here, a guest will have to pay from 450 rubles per night. And renting a one-room apartment in the city will cost from 1,500–2,500 rubles per day.
What sights of Uglich are worth seeing?
Uglich is as popular among tourists as its neighbors - the cities of the Golden Ring of Russia. The main city attractions are unique examples of Old Russian architecture. The most famous of them are located in the center of Uglich.
1. Transfiguration Cathedral

This is one of the main attractions of the city. It is part of the ensemble of the Uglich Kremlin, the buildings of which are located on the banks of the Volga.
The first wooden temple on this site appeared in the 13th century. Two centuries later, a stone cathedral was built in its place, which witnessed the Time of Troubles. And at the end of the 17th century, the third cathedral was erected here. It has survived to this day.
The bulbous domes are of a rich green color and are visible from afar. The cathedral bell tower, made of stone, also attracts attention. The interiors of the temple, which were decorated and painted by serf craftsmen, are very beautiful.

2. Church of Tsarevich Dimitri - Temple “On the Blood”

It was in Uglich under mysterious circumstances died Tsarevich Dimitri is the son of Ivan the Terrible. A modest wooden chapel was erected at the site of his death. Then - a temple made of logs and boards. And in 1692, a stone church was erected instead - a bright red building with blue domes.
The “exile bell” is kept in the temple - it was he who informed the residents of Uglich about the death of the young prince on May 15, 1591. The bell received this name because after the tragic events it was first flogged and then exiled to Tobolsk, like a living rebel. But at the end of the 19th century he returned to Uglich and became one of the most famous exhibits of the Uglich Museum.

3. Princely Chamber

This is a monument not of ecclesiastical, but of civil architecture. The residential building was erected by order of Ivan III’s brother, Prince Andrei the Bolshoi. It was he who ruled in Uglich in the 16th century, when the Princely Chambers appeared.
The Uglich princes lived here for many years, and Tsarevich Dimitri lived in 1584–1591. At the beginning of the 17th century, the palace was burned and destroyed. Its ruins were dismantled bricks, which were then used to build other structures. But there was only one Chamber left - according to legend, the most beautiful part of the princely chambers. Today, a branch of Uglichsky is open in the restored building museum.
4. Monument to Tsarevich Dimitri
It is also located on the territory of the Uglich Kremlin. But, unlike its ancient neighbors, it appeared here recently. Monument opened May 28, 2015.
The bronze sculpture, more than three meters high and weighing one and a half tons, depicts a boy with his head slightly bowed. Lies at his feet knife. And among local residents almost immediately after the opening of the monument appeared a new tradition is to rub a knife for good luck.
The sculpture can be seen next to the Princely Chamber.
5. Ensemble of the Resurrection Monastery

This beautiful complex consists of several buildings. Tourists can see the snow-white Resurrection Cathedral, the Church of Mary of Egypt and the adjacent belfry, refectory chamber and clock tower. The buildings are connected by a gallery.
First monastery could be built on the banks of the Volga back in the 13th century. During the Time of Troubles and the Polish invasion, it, like many other buildings, was also destroyed. It was rebuilt in the middle of the 17th century. Since then, the complex has seen both good times and periods of oblivion. But in 1971 it was restored. Today it is a functioning monastery and one of the main attractions of Uglich.
6. The building of the former City Duma

This building in the classicist style is located in the southeastern part of the Uglich Kremlin. The two-story house with a mezzanine is decorated with a portico with six snow-white columns.
Building built in 1813–1815. City government offices, that is, the administration of Uglich, were located here.
City officials operated in this building for over a hundred years. Now they are here exposition Uglich Museum. And the large hall, where the City Duma once met, has been turned into the Red Drawing Room. Chamber concerts are held here.
7. Hydropower Museum

A modern facility that is also very popular among citizens and tourists. The museum is located next to the Uglich hydroelectric power station. Here you can learn about the history of the development of the hydropower industry in Russia. The guides talk about the construction of power plants and their work.
But the main thing is what's inside the building located an interactive center where exhibits can not only be viewed, but also touched. Guests can use touch screens and maps, and watch interesting and educational videos in the cinema room.

Linen products
First of all, these are household goods: linen sheets, towels, curtains, bedspreads. Traditional Russian sundresses and shirts are in great demand. But many guests also choose modern clothes: summer trousers, skirts, jackets.
Ceramics
In Uglich you can find authentic products of local potters: cups, salad bowls, plates, tureens. They are made by hand, fired, but often not painted. Therefore, modern ceramic products are very similar to the traditional dishes that were used here many centuries ago.
Wood and birch bark products
You can look for interesting carved figurines, boxes, bowls and household utensils. Tourists are offered to choose a light birch bark chest, basket, hairband or bracelet.
Handmade products from other Volga cities
In Uglich you can buy enamel from Rostov: dishes, jewelry, interesting souvenirs. Choose majolica from Yaroslavl: vases and flowerpots, figurines, decorative items, handmade Christmas tree decorations. Buy fine, elegant tableware from the Kuznetsov porcelain factory.
Local cheeses
Cheese making here has a long history. The first small cheese production factories appeared in Uglich in the middle of the 19th century. Today you can try the products of modern masters here. And choose which hard or soft cheese to bring from Uglich as a gift.
Smoked or dried fish
Like in other Volga cities, fish are caught in Uglich. Pike perch, roach, tench, eel, bream, ide, and asp are found here. Many tourists before leaving, choose smoked or dried fish as a gift. It is very tasty here, but watch the expiration date.
