Experts say when smartphone screens will become “self-healing”
Miscellaneous / / October 11, 2023
Experts from the analytical company CCS Insight predicted the imminent appearance of smartphones with screens that themselves will correct minor damage.
According to their estimates, they can enter the market within the next 5 years. That is, no later than 2028. The technology involves the use of a nanocoating on displays, which, when scratches appear, will create a new layer under the influence of the environment.
We're not talking about miraculous restoration of broken screens. These are just minor cosmetic scratches.

They recall that back in 2013, LG released the G Flex smartphone with a vertical curved screen and a “self-healing” coating on the back panel. But then the company did not explain the principle of operation of this technology. And in 2017, Motorola filed a patent for a screen made of “shape memory polymer,” which itself “heals” damage.
The implementation of the technology is currently hampered by the low volume of investment in this area, analysts say. Another obstacle they call is the difficulty of using it in mass production of devices.
