On October 4, as part of a big presentation, Google released two new flagship smartphones - Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Insiders revealed their main characteristics a few weeks before the announcement, so the manufacturer could only confirm everything and talk about new smart functions. But first things first.
The smartphones received an already recognizable design with a horizontal bar for cameras on the rear panel. The outlines of the body have become more rounded. New colors have appeared. IP68 moisture protection has been maintained.
Both smartphones are designed to make them easy to repair if the display or body is damaged.
The displays are flat on both smartphones:
- Pixel 8 — 6.2-inch OLED panel with FHD+ resolution, peak brightness of 2000 nits and refresh rate of 60-120 Hz;
- Pixel 8 Pro - 6.7-inch LTPO OLED display with QHD+ resolution, brightness up to 2400 nits and refresh rate 1-120 Hz.
Inside the smartphones there is a new Google Tensor G3 chip. This is complemented by 8GB of RAM on the Pixel 8 and 12GB on the Pixel 8 Pro. In both cases it is fast LPDDR5X memory. Drives - from 128 GB. Both models support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC.
The basic model has a dual main camera with a 50 MP main module (f/1.68) and support for Super Res Zoom up to ×8. The second sensor with wide-angle optics has a resolution of 12 megapixels and has autofocus. It is also used in the new macro mode.
The Pro version has the same main sensor, but with improved focusing, the “width” is already 48 megapixels - also with “improved autofocus”, and there is a “telephoto” with support for 5x optical zoom and 30x Super Res Zoom.
The selfie camera of the flagships is the same, 10.5 megapixels. It can be used to unlock the gadget by the user's face.
Among the new AI-based software functions, the manufacturer also highlighted the ability to change faces in an image - Best Take. It allows you to instantly correct the shot if someone blinked or turned away.
The Pro version allows you to shoot in full resolution (up to 50 megapixels) and record much higher quality video, followed by cutting off background noise in one click. There will also be a professional mode with fine manual settings.
With the update, the Magic Editor will appear on new smartphones to improve frames - you can change the light, background, sky, and also change the position and size of objects.
And for video enthusiasts, there will be a “game-changing” Video Boost feature. It automatically adjusts contrast, light, saturation and other parameters.
Also, the Pixel 8 Pro has a temperature sensor next to the cameras, which allows you to determine the temperature of the user’s body or, for example, a drink in several measurements. It works in much the same way as a non-contact thermometer.
In terms of batteries and charging, the changes compared to the previous generation are small:
- Pixel 8 — 4,575 mAh, wired charging up to 27 W and wireless charging up to 18 W;
- Pixel 8 Pro - 5,050 mAh, wired charging up to 30 W and wireless charging up to 23 W.
For Pixel 8 series smartphones, the developers promise 7 years of software support. However, the company did not specify how many OS versions the gadgets will receive.
You can buy Pixel 8 in the US starting at $699 (≈70,000 rubles), and Pixel 8 Pro will cost starting at $999 (≈100,000 rubles). For pre-ordering the first one you will receive branded headphones, and for the top flagship - a new smart watch Pixel Watch 2.
