Few people know that the iTunes since version 9.0, there is a semi-automated way to add new media. In the iTunes Media folder is a special folder «Automatically Add to iTunes», which can be used to import files, instead of dragging them on the iTunes icon in the Dock. This way of great saves your time and disk space. About it, and also about how to automate the addition of new content, using the folder and any of our Automator, I want to tell you in today's article.

About the library
ITunes library is located in your user's home directory (~ / Music / iTunes). This folder contains several files associated with the database and, in fact, a folder iTunes Media or iTunes Music, Depending on how long ago we began to use iTunes.
import content
The most common way to import music or video, is dragging it to the iTunes icon in the Dock or in the application window. In this case, the files are copied and placed to the subfolders, then the media library is updated. If a certain actor or album has no private folder, it will be immediately created. This method is disadvantageous in that the added files are duplicated, taking up more space on the disk, thus you have to manually delete them. In addition, it takes time and if you're dealing with large files - it can be critical.
Folder Automatically Add to iTunes
Such difficulties can be avoided if we use a special folder, which is constantly monitored. If you put in the media Automatically Add to iTunesThey will just be moved, not duplicated. If iTunes is running at this moment - the imported files will be immediately "laid out on the shelves," also immediately updated, and a library. This method is much more efficient, as content is added instantly to the same files are not duplicated.
Adding new content
For example, let's add a movie using an alternative method. iTunes is not running, so the file will be in this time Automatically Add to iTunesBefore its next run. As soon as we launch iTunes, it will immediately scan the folder and will see a new movie. After a few seconds the file will peremschen to the appropriate folder (in this case a folder Movies) And will appear in your section.
If you try to add files to iTunes, which he does not, they will be moved to a special folder not addedWith the addition of sub-folders, which as the name assigned to the date of import.
Create a service to move the content to iTunes
Since the folder Automatically Add to iTunes hidden in the depths of the file system, do not be amiss to put it in the sidebar. Now you can just drag and drop new content on it and it will automatically be imported into iTunes. It's an option for the lazy, but if you want to import the files with even greater convenience - let's create for this special service. So, what we need to do:
- Run Automator and choose as type of document - Service.
- To select the input Files and folders and In any program.
- In the sidebar open item Files and foldersWe find in it the action Move Finder items and drag it into the action bar.
- Now, in paragraph whom We indicate our location Automatically Add to iTunes (Do not worry, that in the end it will be appended .localised).
- Save the service and give it a name of your own, such as Import to iTunes.
Now, when you need to import the file (s) to your iTunes library, simply select it in the Finder and press services — Import to iTunes. Also, you can assign a hot key to our service import. How it's done, described in detail in one of my articles.
DownloadAutomate the process of removing unsupported files
Our service copes with import content, but if you come across a video and unsupported files including music - they settle quietly in a folder not added and you forget about them well, that is not quite good, especially if you work with large volumes of files.
This trouble we are also correct and also using Automator;)
- Run Automator and choose as type of document - Actfolders.
- We select our folder Notadded.
- we find item shownotification and drag it to the actions pane. We set the notification text to your liking.
- we find item GetspecifiedobjectsFinderWe drag it and add a folder not addedBy clicking Add (Sorry for the pun).
- We find and add to the action bar item Show Finder objects.
- Now save all this, the process of assigning any name.
So that is all. From that moment on, our folder not added It will monitor the process we have created, which will show a notification and display the files which have not been imported into the library. With this approach, you definitely will not forget about them and instantly be able to remove them.
