This is what we are watching: “Reincarnation” - the triumphant debut of Ari Aster

Post-horror that scares.
In the new series Articles every week I talk about which films and TV series amazed me.
Ari Aster is called one of the most exciting directors of the new generation. After the incredible tape "All Bo's fears“He finally turned into a darling of critics and a flagship of post-horror films. However, his debut, Reincarnation, is somewhere between standard horror films and a reinvention of the genre.
The film tells the story of a family experiencing the loss of a loved one. The death of a grandmother drives relatives into depression, and an attempt to get out of a state of mourning turns into tragic events.
Ari Aster creates a creepy, unpleasant atmosphere from the very first minutes. In the future, it will remain unchanged - the director has produced a very smooth film, which debutants rarely achieve. At the same time, different methods are used to create gloom and nervousness on the screen: a tragic plot, emotional dialogues, playing with light and sound, acting expression. The film mixes grief, anger and resentment.
Even without the mystical events, Reincarnation would be an excellent psychological thriller, but as the plot develops, Ari Aster adds new elements. Many of them are typical of classic horror films: sharp editing, jump scares, dreams. In this regard, the film looks like a rehearsal for Astaire's future works - later he will get rid of jump scares and concentrate on the emotional background. At the same time, the presence of standard techniques makes “Reincarnation” a truly scary horror film.
Ari Aster refuses the standard linearity of the plot, not allowing the viewer to guess what will happen next. Events happen all the time that change history. Some decisions are radical, almost absurd, but they do not destroy the tension, but only intensify it and increase the degree of cruelty. Because of this, “Reincarnation” attracts attention and forces you not to be distracted. And the incredible performance of actress Toni Collette adds so much expression that sometimes the film becomes awkward - as if you are watching hysterics at a funeral.
“Reincarnation” is an ideal film for both those who love classic horror and those who have more respect for post-horror and rethinking of genre canons. Already in his second film, “Solstice"Aster will almost completely abandon traditional techniques. And, apparently, he will not return to them again. Perhaps this makes the director’s first work even more valuable.
