Scientists have shown Handsome Prince Charlie, who rebelled against the British crown

The difference with lifetime portraits turned out to be colossal - this is due to the flattery of court artists.
Scientists from the University of Dundee (UK) reconstructed the face of Handsome Prince Charlie, who in 1745 led the Scottish uprising against the rule of the British and was deprived of hereditary rights to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland. As a result, he became a hero of local folklore.
His real name was Carl Edward Stuart. And where his flattering nickname came from is not known for certain. He was the penultimate representative of the House of Stuart and was considered one of the main contenders for the British crown in 1766-1788.
A three-dimensional model of the face was created based on the analysis of the structure of his face from death masks. The obtained data was loaded into a special program, which first visualized them, and then rejuvenated them by about 40 years. The result was a prince, as he was during his rebellion.
Interestingly, the result of scientists is strikingly different from the portraits, in which he looks more regal. Experts believe the old images may have been deliberately flattering.
However, some historians who did not take part in the work treat the 3D model with caution.
There are several portraits that show what he may have looked like in reality - and they all look more like each other than this reconstruction.

The British army crushed the Scottish uprising in 1946. After the defeat, the prince had to flee to Scotland, where he hid for some time under the guise of a servant. Then the applicant went to France, and then to Italy. Charles died in 1788 at the age of 67.
