Hackers found a way to determine the IP address and location via Skype
Miscellaneous / / August 29, 2023
Independent security researcher under the pseudonym Yossi discovered in the mobile version of Skype, a vulnerability that allows attackers to learn the user's IP address. In some cases, it can also be used to determine the location of the target.
The victim does not even need to click on the link or otherwise interact with the message of the ill-wisher - just open it. Immediately after that, confidential data is transferred to the hacker's server. As it turned out, this works even when using VPN services.
According to the researcher, the problem only affects Skype mobile applications. In desktop versions of the service, he did not find this vulnerability.
When people communicate through any service, the application not only facilitates this communication, but also acts as a kind of buffer between them. In many cases, the service knows the IP address of each individual user. But usually this information is hidden. In Skype, it is practically in the public domain. Any person who has certain knowledge in the field of cybersecurity can get it.

Yossi has already reported this vulnerability to Microsoft. However, the company did not attach any importance to his appeal. Only after reports from journalists, the corporation promised to fix it in the next product update, without naming the exact timing of the release of the patch.
