Insider: iPad Pro will receive the first major update since 2018

At the same time, they will rework the Magic Keyboard: with it, the tablet will look even more like a laptop.
How informs Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing to release a redesigned iPad Pro in 2024.
Gurman notes that the iPad, which was once supposed to be a replacement for the Mac, has in fact turned into the most unfortunate large category of Apple gadgets. Over the last quarter, sales reached their lowest since 2020, when the drawdown was affected by the pandemic. Gurman sees one of the reasons as in users who do not plan to update their fully working tablets or switched to smartphones with a larger screen, which is why the need for a tablet in general dropped. But Apple's decisions had no less impact. Here are just a few examples:
- In recent years, tablet updates have become less noticeable and significant. The latest major update was the base 10th generation iPad with a new design, while the iPad mini hasn't been updated in two years and the iPad Pro hasn't changed much since 2018.
- Apple has a large and strange line of iPads. On the shelves are the 11-inch iPad Pro and iPad Air, which are similar in size and design. The Pro model has LiDAR, a ProMotion screen, an M2 chip, and a second camera, but costs $200 more. And most users do not need these improvements. At the same time, the iPad 10 for some reason did not replace the iPad 9, which remained the last model with a Home button.
- Apple competes with itself by constantly improving the Mac line. Laptops are becoming lighter, more powerful, stronger and cheaper. They are fast and hold a charge for a long time, which is why many users no longer need an iPad at all.
- The software is developing strangely. Director Mode, which was supposed to improve multitasking, doesn't work perfectly, and Apple is trying hard not to add some macOS features to iPadOS.
But Apple understands these problems and is preparing an updated iPad Pro for 2024. The new models, code numbers J717, J718, J720, and J721, will switch to M3 processors and be Apple's first tablets with OLED screens. They are clearer, brighter, and render colors better. The devices will be available in 11-inch and 13-inch versions (that is, we say goodbye to the 12.9-inch version).
Along with the new iPad Pro comes a redesigned Magic Keyboard. Gurman does not go into details, but claims that with it the tablet will become more like a laptop. She will also get an enlarged trackpad. Until this release, you should not expect any significant changes in the iPad.
