It’s all the fault of the miners and “businessmen” who resell the storage space.
dropbox announced on the refusal of unlimited storage in the Advanced tariff, aimed at corporate use. This is explained by the fact that recently more and more people are buying Advanced “not to manage a business or company, but to mining cryptocurrencies, including Chia, also unrelated individuals share storage for personal use or even resell place".
Representatives of the service argue that the constant monitoring of "acceptable" and "unacceptable" use is not seems possible, so they made the decision to remove the unlimited option and switch to fixed plans. limits.
Starting this week, new Dropbox Advanced members with three active licenses will have access to 15 TB of storage. That's enough to store "100 million documents, 4 million photos, or 7,500 hours of HD video." At the same time, each additional activated license will add 5 TB, and the total limit will be available to all users.
According to the company, 99% of Advanced plan users use less than 35 TB. These users will receive change notifications and receive an additional 5 TB of storage for free for 5 years.
A small number of users who have more than 35 TB will be able to receive a personal offer for storage up to 1000 TB on individual terms: Dropbox representatives will contact them to agree on the details of the new plan.
The transition to the new plans will take place gradually, starting from November 1. Users will be notified at least 30 days before the change takes effect.
New users will be able to add space to their main plan starting September 18th. Each additional terabyte will cost $10 per month or $96 per year. From November 1, existing users of the service will also receive this opportunity.
