Xiaomi is preparing MiOS - its own operating system to replace Android
Miscellaneous / / August 23, 2023
Xiaomi registered the MiOS trademark and the associated domain mios.cn, which were applied for as early as November 11, 2022. So far, access to the site is closed and there are no official details, however, the Chinese insider DigitalChatStation claimsthat we are talking about an operating system developed by Xiaomi and compatible with AOSP (Android Open Source Project).
If the description sounds similar, then you are not mistaken: HarmonyOS is implemented according to the same principle. The system is compatible with Android apps, but uses its own code.
There are suggestions on the Web that Xiaomi will rename MIUI 15 to MiOS this year, but DigitalChatStation refutes this information. This is in line with That_Kartikey, an insider who writesthat the system will appear next year with the release of the Xiaomi electric car, then it will become available in smart home devices, and only then, probably, will appear in smartphones. That is, at least until 2025, MIUI will still be relevant.
At the same time, Huawei is already gradually moving away from Android support in its system: the company announced a system update HarmonyOS NEXT, which completely gets rid of AOSP and associated rudimentary code, making the system lighter. But the move comes with a price: Users will have to switch to the native HarmonyOS app as Android apps will no longer be supported. It is not yet clear if this is part of Xiaomi's plans.
