Roskomnadzor is going to block millions of gray SIM cards
Miscellaneous / / August 08, 2023
If you do not provide personal data, the SIM card purchased from the metro will soon stop working.
Since the beginning of August, Roskomnadzor began to require telecom operators to block subscriber numbers with outdated personal data. About it report Vedomosti, citing representatives of the two operators.
Within 3 days after receiving the list of numbers from the RKN, the operator must notify subscribers. After that, they will have 15 days to provide up-to-date data through the State Services, in the operator's application or in the communication salon. If this is not done, the number will be blocked in accordance with the law "On Communications".
Cards that are given and sold without concluding a contract, as well as corporate SIM cards that companies buy in bulk for employees, are at risk. In order to continue using the number from such a card, the user needs to inform the operator of the full name, date of birth and passport data.
Vedomosti also cites information from Telecom Daily, according to which about 6.5-7 million "gray" SIM cards are currently used in Russia, and they are still easy to buy on the street - for example, at railway stations. But their number is gradually decreasing: two years ago there were 11 million.
If those who received notifications of a possible blocking do not provide personal data, as early as mid-August Big Four operators will turn off about a million SIM cards, and by the end of the month they can block all "gray" ones numbers.
It is noted that blocking the SIM card means that the number owned by the user can be resold to another subscriber. If the SIM card is regularly used and tied to important services, it is recommended to update the data and “whitewash” the card.
