It only worked on the third try.
archaeologists at last found the entrance to an ice age cave near the city of Engen in Germany - they have been looking for it for the last half century. The “door” has been walled up for 16,000 years.
The existence of the cave became known in the 1970s. Then, during the construction of a water pipe, workers accidentally punched a hole in its ceiling. However, the researchers could not get inside - they could not find the entrance.
In 2021, excavations began at this site. Archaeologists were engaged in them for a month and a half, but the second attempt was also unsuccessful. In April of this year, they decided to use ground penetrating radar. With his help, it turned out that the cave is much larger than expected - the ceiling height is several meters, and the depth reaches at least twenty meters. And soon the device showed the entrance. As it turned out, he was underground.
Archaeologist from the University of Tübingen (Germany) Yvonne Tafelmeier calls this discovery a real sensation.
