Things to remember when storing cucumbers
- If you have harvested vegetables from your own kitchen garden, try to store them as soon as possible - this way they will stay fresh longer.
- When buying cucumbers in the market or in a store, choose strong specimens with a dense skin. Withered ones will quickly become worthless, even despite all the tricks to increase the shelf life.
- Cucumbers spoil quickly when exposed to ethylene. Therefore, do not put them next to vegetables and fruits that actively emit this gas. For example, among the "harmful" neighbors are apples, avocados, melons, kiwis, peaches, pears, peppers and tomatoes.
How to prepare cucumbers for storage
Sort the vegetables carefully. Put the damaged and soft ones aside - it is better to eat them first. Throw away the rotten ones. Dry strong and dense specimens by spreading them on a towel, or wipe them with napkins. You don't need to wash cucumbers.
How to store fresh cucumbers
1. In paper towels
Wrap each cucumber in a separate paper towel. The bundle should be dense and completely cover the vegetable on all sides.
Put the cucumbers in a plastic bag and refrigerate for storage.
2. In plastic containers
Place a cloth or paper towel in the bottom of a food container.
Place the cucumbers in a bowl. Cover them with another towel on top.
Close the container with a lid and send to fridge for storage.
By the way, instead of containers, you can use dense packing bags, for example, with a zip fastener. At the bottom of each, you also need to put a paper towel or gauze.
3. In food wrap
Place dry cucumbers on cling film. Wrap in 2-3 layers so that the material completely covers the vegetables on all sides.
For convenience, pack no more than 3-5 fruits in one bundle. This amount is easier to wrap in a film. Although you can pack the cucumbers separately.
