What is the rate of hair loss per day
Our hair are growing not at the same time, each of them is in its own phase of the life cycle. Most (up to 90%) in the growth phase - anagen, another 1% in the transition stage, or catagen, and the rest in the resting stage - telogen.
Those who are in the latter naturally fall out as obsolete. Usually it is 100-150 hairs every day.
When they are long, it may be more noticeable on a hairbrush or in a sink drain, but still does not necessarily mean something unsettling.
Why is more hair falling out?
Cause simple: too much hair at once ended up in the telogen phase. For example, this happens on the 3-4th month after childbirth. During pregnancy, the hair usually stays longer in the growth stage, and then should fall out at about the same time. It looks scary, but it's a natural process. This is called telogen effluvium.
Excessive shedding also occurs after:
- severe stress;
- sudden weight loss of 10 or more kg;
- diseases with high fever;
- operations;
- end of contraception.
Usually, hair thinning is not noticeable immediately, but after about 30-60 days, and within 6-9 months the density is restored. But if the cause is not eliminated - for example, stress or a protracted illness does not go away, then the loss continues.
Why Hair Can't Grow
If something prevents hair from growing, then this called anagen alopecia. This happens because:
- hereditary predisposition;
- too strong reaction of the immune system, which attacks its own hair follicles;
- certain medicines, such as chemotherapy;
- hairstyles that are too tight, such as high ponytails or African braids;
- aggressive care products;
- hair pulling habits (trichotillomania).
If the problem is in medications or care products, then after they are canceled, the hair will begin to grow again. In other cases, treatment may not always help. A dermatologist who deals with trichology, the science of diseases of the hair and scalp, will tell you about this.
When to See a Doctor
Make an appointment with a trichologist if you worries hair condition. It is very difficult to determine the norm yourself, and this situation is usually very unnerving. You don't have to be alone if you feel that hair loss is affecting your life.
