It is able to curb hurricanes with wind speeds up to 287 km/h.
Chinese company Three Gorges Energy launched the world's largest offshore wind turbine MingYang Smart Energy MySE 16-260 with a capacity of 16 MW.
It was installed in the Fujian Offshore Wind Farm in the Taiwan Strait. Over 200 days a year, this region experiences "near-storm conditions" with winds in excess of 51 km/h. Now this problem will become a source of energy for about 36,000 homes of local residents.
The giant windmill reaches a height of 260 meters, which is comparable to a 50-story skyscraper. Its engine room and generator weigh 385 tons, and each of the three 123-meter blades adds another 54 tons. That is, the total weight is 547 tons.
For one revolution, the MingYang Smart Energy MySE 16-260 generates 34.2 kWh of energy. The wind turbine is expected to produce about 66 GWh annually. It is able to withstand wind gusts up to 287 km/h, which is even more than the maximum recorded in the area in 1979, when the hurricane raced through the Taiwan Strait at a speed of 260 km/h.
Xinhua News Agency notesthat wind turbines in China will continue to grow. The China State Shipbuilding Corporation is already building an 18-megawatt turbine with a capacity of up to 20 MW and a height of a 70-story building.
