Apple Maps will get offline mode in iOS 17
Miscellaneous / / July 17, 2023
It will be possible to download and use maps without the Internet not only on the iPhone, but also on the Apple Watch.
One of the unobvious innovations iOS 17 has become a long-awaited opportunity downloading maps for offline use in the standard Maps application. It will allow you to move around an unfamiliar city without connecting to the Web. Most other mapping services already offer this feature.
So far, only users with the iOS 17 beta version can download maps (for how to install it, read this article). Here is how to download the required maps:
- Open the Maps app and tap on the profile icon to the right of the search bar.
- Select Offline Maps → Upload New Map.
- Select the desired zone on the map and click "Download".
In the settings, you can choose which network will be available for downloading maps (only via Wi-Fi or via mobile network too), whether you want to download maps automatically and optimize storage. After loading the map, you can change its size and name, as well as delete individual maps.
It is noteworthy that the downloaded maps can be used not only on the iPhone, but also on the Apple Watch connected to it with watchOS 10. This will enable navigation from the watch without internet, but only when the smartphone is nearby.
If you download a map for which 3D viewing is available, the function will only work when connected to the Internet. But 3D models of attractions will be displayed.
