Mission: Impossible: Deadly Reckoning is out. Tom Cruise risks his life again and fights AI
Miscellaneous / / July 12, 2023
The franchise remains true to itself.
The Mission Impossible franchise started back in 1996, but only reached its full capacity in recent years. With each new part, Tom Cruise performs more and more insane stunts, destroying world-class villains along the way. The new one, already the seventh in a row, continues to entertain the viewer with bright action scenes.
Christopher McQuarrie, the author of the previous two films, again acted as director and screenwriter. Starring the same Tom Cruise. He is accompanied by Rebecca Ferguson (Bunker), Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy), Hayley Atwell (The First Avenger).
Ethan Hunt is once again involved in an important task - villains from all over the world are trying to get two keys that allow them to control powerful artificial intelligence. He is forced to meet people from his past in order to save the world from an unprecedented threat.
Simple and predictable plot
For six parts, Tom Cruise managed to fight with a bunch of dangerous people. Clearly, changes were needed. Now he fights with the villains who want to take possession of the most powerful artificial intelligence, and with the AI itself. Sometimes it works.
Around the middle of the movie, the plot even suddenly becomes interesting, a rare moment in a franchise where something exciting happens outside of the stunts. True, after a couple of scenes, the classic returns spy a thriller where people brag about their stuff.
In some places, "Mission Impossible" surprises with coincidences with other recent blockbusters - the scene in the desert at the beginning of the film is as if referring to the last "John Wick", and the powerful artificial intelligence resembles the "Eye of God" from the last "Forsage". As an order, there is also the postscript "Part 1" in the title - the last "Fast and the Furious" was also divided into two halves.
Despite the fact that the plot is predictable and not the brightest, it is pointless to criticize it - it's just a framework. They go to Mission Impossible after another.
familiar little things
"Mission Impossible" is a storehouse of tricks and ideas that wander from one part to another. The seventh is not going to stand out. Once again for franchise Tom Cruise is offered to "choose a side", and he, as if unexpectedly, follows the sun along the path of goodness. Or where there are more tricks, which is basically the same thing.
In the seventh part, there are again a lot of "supertechnologies" and all sorts of computer stuff that looks strange. A strange pocket personal computer stands out in particular, helping to transfer money from cryptocurrency to a regular bank account. Not to mention the ability of artificial intelligence, which creates whatever it wants. True, his true nature is never revealed in order to preserve the intrigue for the next part.
Familiar secondary characters
Mission: Impossible has always worked well with secondary characters. True, they had a rule - they should not overshadow the main character. In fact, they can be divided into two categories: some set off the coolness of Tom Cruise, while others entertain the viewer in the pauses between tricks.
To make the viewer understand that Tom Cruise is the coolest man on the screen, women constantly appear around him. They are strong enough to get involved in dangerous adventures, but still cannot save themselves on their own - in these moments, Tom Cruise shows his strength. You can add a few words about sexism here, but this is a masculine franchise, so nothing out of the ordinary.
As for the entertainment characters, they are primarily Ethan Hunt's closest assistants. Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames sometimes blow off steam, slightly diluting the pathos and seriousness of the film. Thanks to them, at least some balance appears.
Cool tricks of Tom Cruise
Now every movie with Tom Cruise is accompanied by the question "What did he do this time?". It’s even sad that spoilers won’t work – the trailer will do it better. Tricks Tom Cruise has long been a part of the Mission: Impossible advertising campaign. That is, their value before the release of the film is higher than when viewing, they simply do not surprise. When Cruise rides a motorcycle on a cliff, you seem to admire, but at the same time you understand that this is exactly what you expected, and in some places you saw it in promotional materials.
If you admire the courage of Tom Cruise, then you will love all these dangerous stunts. If you are indifferent to such things, then you are unlikely to be delighted with the film.
"Mission Impossible: Deadly Reckoning. Part 1 is an honest and predictable movie for those who genuinely love the past six films. Spyware stuff, Tom Cruise risking his life, a global threat - the whole set is in place. Sometimes the film even condescends to self-irony, albeit through the lips of the protagonist's assistants.
