“Immediately in the top 3 of Nolan”: what they write in the first reviews of “Oppenheimer”
Miscellaneous / / July 12, 2023
If you doubted whether you need to go to the cinema in the case of Russian distribution.
Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer will premiere on July 21st. The film is dedicated to the life of an American physicist, under whose leadership the atomic bomb was created. Peaky Blinders fame Cillian Murphy stars in the title role, along with Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Gary Oldman and Florence Pugh.
Journalists and critics have already seen the film at preview screenings and shared brief impressions on Twitter. Here is what they write.
1. “I was skeptical, but Oppenheimer has been stuck in my head since watching last week. Yes, it's three hours long, but it's similar in density to the Scorsese films, and the last 20 minutes (Emily Blunt clearly agreed to the role because of them) bring the three threads of the narrative to a touching conclusion.
Gregory Ellwood, The Playlist
2. “Totally immersed in Oppenheimer, a dense, conversational and intense film partly about the bomb, but mostly about how doomed we are. Murphy is good, but supporting roles were necessary for success: it's Damon, and Downey Jr., and [Alden] Ehrenreik. A bold, inventive and complex film that can shock the audience
But there is also a downside. Women were not treated well - Emily Blunt only once comes out of her role as a stressed mother. But the movie immediately hits my Nolan top 3, along with Memento and The Prestige."
Jonathan Dean, The Sunday Times
3. “Expect an Oscar nomination: Murphy, Blunt and Downey Jr are phenomenal. It was great to see so much character in the role of Downey Jr. And directing, editing, sound, camera work - everything is just at the highest level. After that, I became an even bigger fan of Nolan."
Eric Davis, Fandango
4. I'm torn between being modest and mysterious about Oppenheimer or saying it's a total knockout. It shattered my brain like a twitching plutonium core and made me sob over the end credits - I don't remember the last time it managed to achieve that effect."
Robbie Collin, Telegraph
5. “Oppenheimer is incredible. The word "intimidating" comes to mind first. A relentlessly evolving, insanely detailed and intricate historical drama that builds and builds and builds until Nolan completes everything in the most amazing and devastating way."
Bilge Ebiri, Vulture
