“Nominate Gosling for an Oscar”: what they write in the first reviews of Barbie
Miscellaneous / / July 10, 2023
It looks like it's worth going to the movie just for the picture.
Warner Bros. held closed screenings of the film "Barbie" for the press, and the first reviews have already appeared on the Web. These are short reviews from Twitter, not full reviews, so don't be afraid of spoilers. Here is what the journalists and critics who visited these shows write.
1. “Barbie is perfect. Greta Gerwig gives a detailed commentary on what it means to be a woman in this quirky, beautiful and funny painting. The entire cast shines - especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in roles they were clearly born to play."
Katsy Stefan, Variety
2. “I can’t officially leave Twitter without telling you that Barbie is my favorite movie of the year so far. Greta Gerwig somehow exceeded my expectations. She did a great job of looking at both the positive and negative aspects of [the toy line] Barbie. And nominate Ryan Gosling for an Oscar, I'm serious!
Jamie Girac, ComicBook
3. “The Barbie movie is full of surprises. It unwraps layer upon layer of the doll we grew up with while showing that Ken is more than just an addition and also wants to find his identity."
Ty Cole, Mashable
4. “I saw Barbie! The production quality is incredible. In particular, the costume design and production are top notch, making it feel like Barbie and the pink dream houses have really come to life on screen. As for history, it's not all that simple. I think the film does a good job of showing Margot Robbie's Barbie and her journey, but there are other characters with important arcs who needed more screen time."
Perry Nemirov, Collider
5. “Barbie is witty, sincere and just plain fun at times. Ryan Gosling captures attention and brings the most humor, while Margot Robbie's soulful performance touches to the core. While I enjoyed most of the movie, the script feels overblown at times and teetering between the Barbie movie we been waiting for, and at times too harsh commentary on modern society, which detracts from important storylines and development characters. The staging and costume design are amazing, but I wanted more from the film.”
Sharronda Williams, PayOrWait Podcast
