How to get rid of wasps in the country and in the house
Miscellaneous / / July 09, 2023
Use special preparations or make a simple bait.
Single individuals in the country or a couple of random guests in the house will not do much harm. But if you are seeing a really massive appearance of wasps in your possessions, it is worth taking action.
Things to remember when dealing with wasps
- First of all, find a hornet's nest. Watch the insects and see where they go. For example, put some jam or sweet fruits in your house or yard and see where the wasps take their prey. Usually they build a dwelling in warm and wind-protected places. It can be hollow trees, heaps of garbage, greenhouses, corners under the ceiling on verandas and gazebos, voids in the walls and ceilings of the house, garages and sheds, space behind cabinets and household appliances, secluded places in the attic or basement.

- If you are not sure that you can cope with the wasps on your own, call specialists or rescuers from the Ministry of Emergency Situations for help. They will come and eliminate the nest.
- Plan ahead for escape routes. You must consider where you can run and hide if something goes wrong and the swarm goes on the attack.
- Wasp stings can cause allergies, so keep antihistamines on hand. Read the instructions for them in advance and determine the desired dosage. If you have already had a severe allergic reaction to wasp venom, it is better to play it safe and entrust the fight against insects to specialists or rescuers.
- Don't try to knock down a nest with live wasps. So you will only anger the insects, and the flying swarm will surely rush at you. Burning nests is also considered an unsafe way to deal with wasps, especially if their dwelling is large. It is quite difficult to kill all individuals with fire in one fell swoop, and in enclosed spaces such a procedure can lead to fire.
How to Prepare for a Wasp Fight
- Think carefully about your outfit, which will cover absolutely all parts of the body. If you don't have a special beekeeping suit, opt for loose-fitting, heavy-weight clothing that will cover your neck, ankles, and wrists. It is best to wear several things so that the protection is multi-layered. Be sure to tuck a sweater or shirt into trousers, and trouser legs into high socks or stockings.
- Protect your hands with thick gloves, such as leather. Tuck the sleeves into them and rewind everything with tape so that the wasps cannot penetrate between the layers.
- Wear high boots or boots. If there is space between the leg and the shaft, tape the top of the shoe to the pants with tape.
- Put on a special beekeeper's hat or a mosquito net on your head. An ordinary wide-brimmed hat is also suitable, over which a small hat is thrown over. net, and its edges are fixed around the neck with a ribbon or rope.
- If you are going to treat indoors, wear protective goggles and a mask so as not to harm your health.
How to get rid of wasps with the help of special preparations
There are various aerosols for wasp control. Most often they are produced on the basis of cyperthrin, tetramethrin, piperonyl butoxide, permethrin, or a mixture of different substances. They kill both adults and eggs with larvae. Perhaps one of the most popular drugs is Dichlorvos.
It is best to carry out processing in the dark, when the wasps are inactive and rest quietly in their home. Install a flashlight in advance, but do not attach it to yourself, as insects can fly to the light source. Spray the nest thoroughly with spray from all sides. If wasps live in walls or ceilings, close all openings through which they can exit, leaving only one. It is convenient to do this with mounting foam. In such cases, use a more powerful spray capable of spraying at 4-6 m. Apply the product through a tube or a special nozzle, and then seal the hole with foam.
If you are fighting wasps in a house or other enclosed area, leave it after treatment and close the door tightly. As a rule, the exposure time of most products is about an hour. Specific terms may vary depending on the manufacturer and are indicated in the instructions. During this time, do not go indoors or approach the nest outdoors.
After the action time has passed, return to the house in protective clothing and make sure that all the wasps have died. To do this, gently tap on the dwelling with a stick. Repeat if necessary. If the procedure was successful, remove the socket and burn his.
How to get rid of wasps with bait
This method is suitable for garden and orchard. The method is considered safe for humans, so it is not necessary to wear a protective suit when using the bait. Such trap will not help get rid of nests and larvae, but with it there will be fewer wasps on the site. These devices are even used in apiaries, since insecticides cannot be used there so as not to harm the bees.
Take the fermented jam and mix it with water in a ratio of about 1:1. With the resulting liquid, fill plastic bottles ⅔ of the volume. Instead of a mixture of jam, you can use beer or put pieces of fermented fruit or spoiled meat in containers. Fasten the ropes on the necks of the bottles and hang them in different parts of the site, especially in places where wasps accumulate.
Wasps will fly to the smell of the contents of the traps, penetrate to the "delicacy" through the neck, but they will not be able to get out. After the bottle is filled with insects, wait until they die. Close the lid and discard the container.
