Detailed instructions will help replenish the garden with new varieties.
When to plant a rose
It is best to carry out the procedure in July - August. At this time, in plants for rootstock active sap flow occurs, which makes it easier to separate the bark on the stem and increases the chances of a successful survival of the rose in garden.
How to choose and prepare a rootstock before grafting a rose
Most often, a rose is grafted onto rose hip. This plant has good endurance and frost resistance, which means that a delicate flower with such a “cohabitation” will more easily endure even a harsh winter and other weather quirks. You can also plant a flower on other roses. True, it is better to choose frost-resistant and unpretentious varieties.
The dogrose or rose selected for rootstock must be at least three years old. A younger plant may not survive grafting and your efforts will be in vain.
Since the inoculation is done on the root neck of the stock, this place must be freed from the ground. Carefully dig the soil around the bush to a depth of about 7–10 cm.
If there are small roots on the root collar, cut them off with a sharp knife or pruner.
Shorten the stems bushes, leaving a length of about 15 cm. Wipe the root collar with a damp cloth to remove soil residue.
How to prepare cuttings for grafting roses
On the rose bush you like, find a mature young shoot. It should have firm, smooth green bark and live buds in the leaf axils. Try to squeeze the stem you like with your fingers: if it is hard and does not change its shape, feel free to cut it off with a pruner.
After that, cut off all the leaves on the handle, and also carefully remove the thorns.
How to plant a rose on a wild rose or another rose
Disinfect the knife with an alcohol-based liquid to prevent infection roses diseases. Make a vertical incision in the bark at the root collar, guiding the blade upwards. About 2 cm is enough. At the top of the vertical cut, make a horizontal cut about half the diameter of the root neck.
Gently part the bark with the blade of a knife.
Disinfect the instrument again. Find a living kidney on the cutting. Cut it off, leaving a thin layer of stem. You should end up with a plate about 3 cm long.
Remove the layer of green from the cutting wood. It will separate easily. Insert the plate with the kidney into the incision on the root collar as tightly as possible.
Cut off the top of the rose to be grafted so that it is flush with the top notch of the root collar.
Wrap the root neck tightly with film tape, covering the cuts. At the same time, leave the kidney open.
How to care for a rose after vaccination
If the weather is dry, water the plant daily under the root. It is important that the trunk circle is always wet.
If after 1-2 weeks the grafted bud turned black and withered, then the rose did not take root. Try repeating the procedure on another plant. Usually cutting grows together with the stock in 3-4 weeks. With a successful outcome from the kidney, a shoot begins to grow.
In autumn, before the onset of the first frost, shelter vaccination site. To do this, fill the root collar with the trunk with soil, raking it from the edge to the center. The height of the "heap" should be at least 25 cm.
