The cab with the driver is literally separated from the wheelbase, as from a runway.
Chinese automaker Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) introduced the concept of a flying car that can be used on public roads. It was called GOVE.
The concept combines a single-seat passenger drone with six sets of folding rotor blades and a four-wheel chassis for road travel.
Before the flight, the cabin is separated from the wheelbase. Accordingly, GOVE is focused on vertical takeoff and landing.
However, the rechargeable chassis can be controlled remotely, and the company expects such a solution to be of great interest among users.
Details on pricing and production dates have not been announced, but the company executive said that commercialization "is likely to take a long time."
Despite the growing use of drones for videography and agriculture in China, the country does not yet have regulations for the use of flying cars with passengers.
The GAC appears to foresee a demand for such vehicles in southern China, where major cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau are clustered close to the sea and a vast river delta.
In addition to aircraft, the company is also looking to accelerate the development of cutting-edge technologies to fight intensifying competition in China's conventional automotive market. The company recently introduced a hybrid car that uses a hydrogen engine and electricity. Engines running on ammonia are also being investigated.
