4,000-year-old Stonehenge-like sanctuary discovered in the Netherlands

Archaeologists discovered in the Dutch Tiel a 4000-year-old sanctuary, consisting of ditches and burial mounds. It could serve the same purpose as Stonehenge.
Like the famous building in the south of England, the Dutch counterpart is impressive in its size - its area is comparable to three football fields. However, instead of stones, there are wooden poles.
On the territory of the sanctuary, scientists discovered three burial mounds, the largest of which reaches 20 meters in diameter. The passages to them are arranged in such a way that the sun shines through the wooden structures on the longest and shortest days of the year.
This shrine must have been a very important place for the people. Here they celebrated special days of the year, performed rituals and buried their dead. The largest mound served as a solar calendar, like the stones of Stonehenge.

They also found numerous human skulls, animal skeletons and valuable items here. Among the artifacts were a bronze spearhead and a glass bead from Mesopotamia (modern Iraq). The latest find indicates that the inhabitants of this part of Europe were already in contact with the Middle East and could travel over distances of about 5,000 kilometers.
