Scientists have found a link between daytime sleep and brain health

In an article for the journal Sleep Health, researchers from the University of California London and the University of the Republic in Uruguay reported that a short dream throughout the day can help protect brain health as you age. About it writes The Guardian.
In their study, scientists relied on data from the British Biobank. Genetics, lifestyle and health data were collected from large datasets on 500,000 people aged 40 to 69 years.
The researchers tried to find out how the combination of genetic variants is associated with habitual daytime sleep, brain size, cognitive function and other aspects of health.
The scientists noted that this study is of great interest because the decrease in brain size that occurs with age accelerates in people with cognitive problems and neurodegenerative diseases, and some studies suggest that this may be due to problems sleep.
Based on the results of the new study, scientists have made several interesting conclusions, the main of which is that regular daytime sleep can provide some protection against neurodegenerative changes.
Dr Victoria Garfield, co-author of the study at University College London, stressed that short naps may help preserve brain volume, and this has the potential to help prevent dementia.
Garfield added that there are many risk factors that can lead to dementia, while many other factors can also affect brain volume. This new study only shows a newly identified link. Further research on the importance of sleep may provide more accurate data on its impact on human health.
