How to tie grapes correctly
Miscellaneous / / June 18, 2023
We understand all the nuances - from creating a trellis to ways of attaching a vine.
Why tie grapes
The vine develops quite quickly, and if you do not streamline it, the vineyard will turn into dense thickets. Timely garter will allow the plant to be well ventilated and receive the necessary amount of sunlight. This will not only affect the setting and ripening of the crop, but also protect the grapes from diseases and pests. In addition, it is much easier and faster to collect ripe bunches from a neat vine. And if almost any support can be used for wild grapes (for example, fence or mesh), for high-quality it is better to build a special trellis.
When to tie grapes
The procedure is carried out in several stages. The first, βdryβ garter is done in the spring, when the vine is freed from shelters, stable positive air temperatures are established. Try to be in time before the buds on the plant swell, otherwise there is a risk of breaking them off in the process. Usually, the optimal time for manipulations is at the end of March - mid-April, although the dates may shift depending on the climate and weather patterns.
Summer, "green" garter is carried out several times per season. For the first time, young shoots are attached to a support when they reach a length of 40β50 cm. Then the procedure is repeated as the lashes grow. On average, over the summer, the vine is tied up to four times - a large role is played by the variety and characteristics of the development of grapes.
How to make a trellis for tying grapes
You can provide support for the plant both before and after it. landings. The design consists of vertical pillars, between which there are four or five horizontal lines. To create a trellis, you can choose any durable materials that can withstand the weight of overgrown bushes and ripe clusters.
Dig metal pipes, poles or other similar elements along the edges of the vineyard. If the row with plants is long, make several supports at a distance of no more than 3 m from each other. The height of the columns should be such that you can reach the top with your outstretched hand. Usually it is no more than 2.5 m.
As a horizontal support, you can take a strong galvanized or polymer-coated wire with a diameter of about 3 mm. It is pulled in several rows: the first at a level of about 0.5 m from the ground, the next - at the same distance from each other. Thus, four or five horizontal lines should be obtained.
For convenient fastening of cables, symmetrical through holes can be made in the supports and an anchor bolt with a hook can be fixed in each.
And then pull the wire between the supports, threading it into the hooks and fixing it with cable clamps.
Such a trellis will become a strong support even for an adult vine.
How and with what to tie grapes to a support
The fastening of the branches must be reliable, otherwise they may break under the influence strong wind or under the weight of ripening bunches.
1. tapener
The easiest and fastest way is to tie the vine with a taper. A tape and staples are laid in a special apparatus, then it must be leaned against the attachment point and the handle must be pressed. As a result of a slight movement of the hand, the plant is on a cable in a free loop.
2. wire
To do this, you will need pieces of soft thick wire about 15 cm long. With one end, you need to tightly wrap the horizontal cable three times at the point where the vine is attached.
With the other end, go around the vine, leaving a free loop, and fix the wire on the cable.
3. Rope
Cut the strong rope into pieces about 15 cm long. Wrap the section in the middle around the cable three times, and then tie up the grape stem nodeleaving a free loop.
How to tie grapes in spring
At this time, the vine must be attached to the lowest tier of the trellis.
Direct one branch to the right and fix it in several places with a rope, wire or taper, making loose loops.
Direct the other process to the left and also attach to the cable in several places.
In this way tie the entire vine to the lower cable along the entire length of the vineyard, guiding the branches to the left and right so that they practically do not intersect.
How to tie grapes in summer
As soon as the green stems grow to 40-50 cm, that is, they reach the second tier of the trellis, tie each branch to the wire. Moreover, you need to fix the shoot so that the mount is below the rosette of leaves.
Try to place the shoots strictly vertically. If not all the stems have grown to the desired height, wait a couple of days and tie up the remaining branches Later.
Subsequent tying procedures are carried out in a similar way when the shoots reach the third, fourth and fifth tier of the support.
