How to make a do-it-yourself trap belt for trees
Miscellaneous / / June 06, 2023
A simple trap will protect the garden from pests.
What is a trapping belt for trees
This is a mechanical trap that surrounds a tree trunk. It protects the plant from pests living in the ground. Insects in an attempt to climb up to the branches fall into the trapping belt. In particular, this simple device is effective against ants, weevils, whitefly, caterpillars, aphids, geese, flower beetles, fruit mites and other garden eaters.
Trapping belts can be dry, sticky, treated with insecticides - special preparations against insects - or combined. Shops and garden centers have ready-made fixtures, and they are easy to install on a tree according to the instructions on the package. Although the hunting belt can be made with your own hands without much effort and expense.
When to install a trap belt on trees
The best time is the very beginning springwhen the buds on the trees have not swelled, and the pests have not yet begun to wake up after hibernation. But if you did not have time to catch this moment, you can set the trap later, it will also protect the plant quite effectively from creeping insects. For example, the same ants carry
aphids in the garden throughout the season.Depending on the type of construction, trapping belts must be periodically removed and immediately replaced or updated by applying certain means. On average, this is done every 3-4 weeks before the onset of stable autumn frosts.
Things to keep in mind when using a tree trap belt
- Install the trap at a height of about 50-60 cm from the ground so that it does not come into contact with the grown grass and other plants. If the tree is young or low, fasten the belt at a lower height so that it does not reach the first fork on the trunk.
- If you have pets roaming the garden, do not use trap belts that contain insect repellant chemicals. The pet can lick the trap and get poisoned. Better make a dry design.
- In autumn, when the cold comes, the hunting belt must be removed, thrown into the trash away from site or burn. Dispose of traps in the same way if you change them during the season.
- Keep in mind that the hunting belt also has disadvantages. Beneficial insects such as bees and bumblebees, as well as birds and small rodents, can fall into the trap.
How to make a hunting belt for trees from polyethylene foam and glue with your own hands
This trap can not be removed from the tree throughout the season, but only occasionally renew the adhesive layer.
What you need
- Foamed polyethylene (damper tape) about 10 cm wide;
- cable clamps (plastic ties);
- special glue for protection against insects;
- scissors.
How to do
1. Attach a piece of polyethylene foam tape to the attachment point of the future belt - about 50 cm from the ground. Wrap the material around the barrel so that the ends overlap slightly. Cut off the excess.
2. Wrap the piece of tape around the barrel. Secure it with two plastic ties a little above and a little below the middle. Try to tighten the clamps as tight as possible so that the polyethylene is snug against the wood.
3. Apply a generous coat of pest control adhesive to the top of the belt. It should cover the entire circumference and voids between the tape and the tree trunk.
4. Then apply another layer of glue in the middle of the trapping belt. You should get a continuous outline around the trunk.
The hunting belt is ready. Periodically inspect it and, if necessary (for example, when it dries out, many pests or dust stick to it), renew the adhesive layer.
How to make a hunting belt for trees from fabric and vegetable oil with your own hands

- unrefined vegetable oil;
- small container.
How to do
1. Pour about 100 ml of vegetable oil into a container.
2. Place fabric strips there and soak them properly with liquid.
3. Wrap the tree trunk tightly with 3-4 layers of oiled tape. Tie her ends tight node.
Oil the trapper's belt generously from time to time without removing it from the tree. It is convenient to do this with a pipette, brush or syringe.
How to make a hunting belt for trees from synthetic winterizer with your own hands
Pests will get stuck in a multi-layered fluffy trap.
What you need
- A piece of synthetic winterizer measuring 50 by 70 cm;
- scotch;
- comb or comb;
- scissors.
How to do
1. Fold the padding in half.
2. Wrap the tree trunk with several layers of material. If the trunk is wide, take a longer piece of synthetic winterizer or use several.
3. Fix the synthetic winterizer in the middle with adhesive tape.
4. "Comb" the material from above and below with a comb so that the fibers become voluminous and fluffy.
Change the padding belt to a new one about once a month.
