How to store herbs so they stay fresh for a long time
Miscellaneous / / May 28, 2023
It takes a little fiddling, but the effort is worth it.
1. How to store greens in a towel
With this method, the greens can stay fresh for up to a month.
Take a paper or thin waffle towel. Go through the bunches and get rid of rotten and spoiled vegetation. The rest of the greens do not need to be washed. Spread the branches one by one over the entire surface of the towel. Then gently roll the material into a roll. Do not make the bundle too tight and do not compress the greens - they should be loose.
Place the roll in fridge on the bottom shelf or in a special compartment for storing vegetables and fruits.
2. How to store greens in a container
The freshness and aromas of herbs will last up to two weeks.
To begin with, carefully sort out the greens and discard the damaged branches. Rinse it under cold running water to remove debris, weeds and dirt. Then put the bundles in a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid. No need to fill it to the top - the greens should be located freely. Pour cold water into the container so that it completely covers the vegetation. Close the container with a lid, put it in the refrigerator and leave it there for 8-10 hours, and preferably for a day. During this time, the greens will have time to absorb moisture.
Then take out the container, drain all the water and shake off the bunches. Put the sprigs back into a damp container (there should be no liquid at the bottom), cover with a lid and send to be stored in the refrigerator. Periodically drain the collected condensate so that the greens do not rot.
3. How to store greens in a jar
This method will help the vegetation stay juicy for one to two weeks.
Get a jar that will hold all of your bundles. Wash it and sterilize in any convenient way. Sort the branches and remove the yellowed and spoiled ones. They do not need to be washed first, and if they are damp, dry them on a paper towel.
Put the greens in a jar with the stems up. Close the container tightly with a clean and dry nylon lid. Send to be stored in the refrigerator.
